The Office

Did anybody see the season premiere of this last night? I know it's based on the original British version, but I think this new one has much more potential. That's mainly because Steve is one hell of a funny guy and he's a lot of fun to watch. The supporting cast seems really good too... they've even got the weird guy with glasses from Six Feet Under whose name I can't remember.

Dixie Mar 25th, 2005 12:32 PM

I watched it, it was pretty good. Apparently that first episode last night was the only mirrored plot of the original series. It's supposed to go in a totally different direction. The cast was pretty cool though and I think they pulled it off wel. I hope the whole season is at least as good as the original. Though I already miss Gareth.

mburbank Mar 25th, 2005 12:52 PM

I thought it was pretty damn good. I loved Steve carrell and I thought the woman playing the secretary did an excellent, subtle job.

MINI BRUSH WITH FAME ALERT! Have I mentioned to y'all that Steve Carrell and I were in the same comedy group in Boston? Just... not at the same time. He left about six months before they hired me.

Drev Mar 25th, 2005 05:02 PM

AW SHIT! I MISSED IT! :(
WHen is it on again? :(
WIll they show an encore of the 1st episode? :(

Royal Tenenbaum Mar 26th, 2005 06:20 PM

People liked this? Wow, that's pathetic. Not only did it ruin of all the funny things it took, it added shit that was ambysmal. The standard of humour has been lower. I didn't laugh once at this shit, while every episode of the original Office made me laugh until I cried.

Rongi Mar 26th, 2005 07:45 PM

did anyone ever tell you that you're a cunt :eek

ziggytrix Mar 26th, 2005 07:50 PM

many, many times

pjalne Mar 27th, 2005 09:12 AM

I just downloaded and watched the first episode, and I really don't see what the point in remaking it was. It's basically the same show, just less subtle and with US accents. And if I can sit in Norway and understand every single Bristish expression and reference, I see no reason why US audiences shouldn't be able to.

I love Steve Carell, but I was kinda surprised he chose to play the boss as a raving monkey and downplay the sly patheticness of the original. Still, that's his take on the character, and there's no real reason why he shouldn't make it his own. He did a good job on the prank scene. What I have a problem with is the way everybody's got a toe planted in sit-com conventions, so nothing feels 'real' the way the original did.

All in all, really unnecessary but not as bad as it could have been.

AChimp Mar 27th, 2005 11:41 AM

The British version is better.

Krythor Mar 27th, 2005 11:51 AM

Much better.

Esuohlim Mar 27th, 2005 01:51 PM

I never saw the British version, but I liked what I saw on Thursday. It's probably because I hate how bad TV usually is. :(

Mockery Mar 27th, 2005 01:57 PM

The first episode is supposed to be the only episode that they "remade", after that it's supposed to go in a completely different direction. Why they remade just the first one, I don't know... maybe to pay homage to the original perhaps? Regardless, seeing Steve along with that weird guy from Six Feet Under on a weekly basis is definitely somethin I'll be looking forward to :o

Yeah, and I don't know if this version of The Office is a good thing or not. On one hand, it's a much better product than most stuff available, and thus raises the bar, on the other hand it's completely pathetic that a country with that big an entertainment industry has to take concepts from other countries to do so.

ScruU2wice Mar 27th, 2005 03:28 PM

yeah I think this show is going to be carried by steve carell.

I didn't bother to watch it because I figured it would just be like 14 minutes of awkward silence and a few minutes of dialogue that would lead up to it, because that's what I heard on conan. I heard nothing but bad stuff about it on another board but I think I might give it a shot. I bet your view on it really depends on wether you've seen the original version.

Rongi Mar 27th, 2005 04:31 PM

for the record i didnt like the british version at all. brit comedy rarely does anything for me with the exception of monty python. i didnt see this version either but i dont intend to :/.

Slinky Ferret Mar 27th, 2005 06:51 PM

Rongi how many episodes did you watch of the British version?

There are some absolutely hilarious scenes in some of them, especially when they have team meetings. I'm curious to see the american version.

To be honest the first time the office was on I turned the channel over. But eventually I watched all the episodes. It takes a little getting used to, but there are some moments that had me in hysterics. Is there no Gareth and Tim type characters in the america version? If not that sucks! They had some of the best bits!

Also if its anything like the British version, you may find yourself cringing at various points.

Sam Mar 27th, 2005 06:54 PM

What channel was the new one on?

I hope they do the bit with the motivational team meeting thingy where david brent gets his guitar. That was brilliant. :)

my sister and her bf made me watch every single episode.

Dole Mar 29th, 2005 05:16 AM

So many English sitcoms have had american versions made, most of them never last beyond a couple of episodes...this one lokks like it is slightly more credible.....but if an american audience has seen and enjoyed the original, what is the point of remaking it? Its never going to be as good.
....if a US version of Alan Partridge is ever attempted, I would be compelled to holiday in the US and shoot everyone involved with it until they were killed to bits.

Dixie Mar 29th, 2005 03:41 PM

Apparently there will be a US version of Father Ted. I'm not too excited about it but I'll give it a chance. We'll see where this version of The Office takes us.

Krythor Mar 29th, 2005 07:42 PM

A remake of Father Ted is seriously the most ludicrous bullshit I've ever heard in my entire life.

I mean, it's not how God intended it to be.

you see, we have a place here in the usa called "the bible belt". and in this belt, all things that are not made in the US are evil and should be cast to hell. also all things black, brown, and gay. and we all know if your show is gonna do well, you gots to have the bible belt. how do you think bush won?
