There's a Chinese myth about dragon who walked up the stairway to heaven and fell down and died. Some guy probably found some dinosaur bones and made up a story around it.

Also, Carl Sagan had some theories about dragons being a result of genetic memories of dinosaurs passed down from the early mammals. Kind of like how a cat knows how to react to mice before ever seeing one. Which could explain why you find dragons in so many cultures that have had very little contact with each other. It could also be a crock of shit. I read it in a book called Dragons of Eden, I think.
