Jazz

I absolutely love jazz. I love fusion, the old stuff from the 20's and 30's, mellow jazz. Hell, I love just about any offshoot of jazz you can come up with. But really, I only listien to it once in a while. I would love to hear so much more of it but I never really buy any jazz music. Most of the time I just hear it in a store or on the radio and really dig it.

So give me some good suggestions. And tell me what category they fall under. It could be any jazz. Is Miles Davis good?

yer so dumb rongi, Miles was great, but I like his work from the 50-60's the most.

Jazz guitarists are my favorite though. Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Les Paul, Johnny Smith, and Grant Green are some of my favorites. :( I really need more jazz myself. I love it :(

haha yeah :(. i like jazz guitar music as well, which is why I'm so addicted to Hot Rats :(

Gordian Knot - much more jazz than metal IMO.

Helm May 6th, 2004 05:41 PM

Gordian Knot are excellent. I have a soft spot for their first album although the second one isn't half bad.

I would also suggest Weather Report. Hah!

John Pizzarelli, Django Reinhardt, Allan Holdsworth.

Does John Pizzarelli skat (i guess) over like everything he plays? I've seen him twice on conan and he did it both times, but he was still fucking amazing. :(

Toronto has a great Jazz station that I listen to :) I like Wynton http://www.wyntonmarsalis.net/main1.html

He skats to an extent, but not all that much. I remember him singing quite a bit. I admit I was paying more attention to his guitar playing, which, as you said, is fucking amazing. That guy is just about a flawless player.

We have a smooth jazz and a regular jazz station in chicago, both are very good.

Thats pretty much saying you Love all modern music in general. :)

I would suggest Weather Report, Wes, Branford and Wynton Marsalis. And of course the classics (The Duke, Coltrane, Davis, Armstrong, etc.)

I hate smooth Jazz :( , except for a few artists. It's too brite and floaty for me...

Helm May 6th, 2004 11:56 PM

Rongi May 7th, 2004 03:03 PM

I already have Bitches Brew.

I discovered this fusion jazz band called Luxus. They rock :D

Bobo Adobo May 7th, 2004 03:39 PM

I was going to say don't get "bitche's brew", before you get some of his earlier stuff, like "Milestones", "Round about Midnight", "Kind of Blue", and some of his sextet stuff.

Bitches is awesome, but its not my favorite Davis....

I'd have to go with Dave Brubeck. "Take Five" is easily one of the best jazz albums ever produced. He has a slightly more recent release called "Young Lions and Old Tigers" (or "Young Tigers and Old Lions." I can never remember which way it is). It's basically Brubeck and his band playing songs he's composed for up and coming jazz artists with said up and coming artists, as well as some standards with his friends. Album features bassist Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, and Michael Brecker, among others.

If you're in the mood for something a bit older, I'd reccommed some bebop. Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gilespie; Jazz gods among men...
