Favorite Riff

Tell people what your favorite guitar riff is, weither if you enjoy listening to it or playing it.

The riff from Prodigy's "Breathe" is a cool riff, because it's got a great groove to it and it's a simple one-string riff, and great for a finger exercise if you play it fast.

All of the riffs off of the Manic Street Preacher's album "The Holy Bible" are my favourites.

What is the actual defintion of a riff anyway, in musical terms?

Just a memorized rythum line that's played multiple times over a verse or by itself. It can be chords or single-string. When someone says "Dude, I just learned this new riff!" or "Hey, that riff kicks ass!" they mean something rythum-wise.

Just so you know, a lead is a short one-shot line (or riff, but it doesn't really fit the definition) that's either remembered or made up off the top of your head (improv) that can be used to fill space, make transitions, or a bunch combined for a solo. This is the aspect of playing most people have problems with. I've been playing 2 years and I just barely have a vauge grasp on soloing, and I'd have beer cans thrown at me if I tried to solo at a open mic night. Back to practice...

Masked Jackal, by Coroner. Or maybe Serpent Moves by said band. They could write some kickass riffs.

BulletCatcher Mar 5th, 2003 01:09 PM

Undying - Echoes - There is an awesome part in the middle of this song, I suppose you could call it a 'bridge'.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Supreme Elder Misanthropy

Well, along the lines of GWAR, I like a LOT of them, but if pressed to pick a favorite riff I'd say it's Jack The World. Good highway music heh heh eh

Two of my favourites from Deep Purple are Smoke on the Water and Perfect Strangers.

Megadeth- "Holy Wars..... The Punishment Due"

Pretty much every single riff in that song is badass.

Sspad is right. Early megadeth are awesome. I have a thing for Tornado of Souls also, but Holy Wars is their peak moment.
