Punk Metal?
 

I like Punk. And I like metal.

And I'm starting a comedy Punk Metal band - covers of "Livin' on a Prayer" and "Ghostbusters" in the line up, plus some full metal finger-tapping solos and cock rocking antics abound.

I need some punk metal bands for inspiration. None of this "hardcore" nonsense, please. Help!

Ummm... the only "punk metal" bands I can think of (though they really don't exist) that might be what you're looking for would be maybe Lagwagon's "Trashed" CD or something like that. That record is basically humorous pop punk with a lot of metal-ish riffs involved from time to time.

Propagandhi's "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes" really blurs the line between punk and metal, if you're looking for some type of inspiration on how to do it right. Oh, and Loranhein, too.

The first two Strung Out CDs come to mind as well. "Another Day In Paradise" (I think) and "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues".

I was going to say that, but I respect Propagandhi too much to call them a "punk metal" band and reduce them to being someone's blueprint for doing punkish covers of cock rock songs, ha, ha... They are one of my favorite bands of all time, though. All of their records fucking rule.

I guess you could possibly say that hatebreed is "Punk Metal" msot of their fans are much more punkish then metalhead but their music sounds more like metal then any other set type of music.

I personally wouldn't say this, but I seem to hear Motorhead being referred to as "punk metal" on occasion.

Although the ONE Motorhead song I can think of that sounds REMOTELY punk is Ace Of Spades.

Yeah, Motorhead seem to be written about as both punk and metal - probably because of their popularity during the late 70's when punk was all the range. Overkill is kinda punky.

Some of Pennywise borders on punk metal, especially their late 90's stuff, Straight Ahead especially. Check out the intro riff on "Just for You"

Lagwagon? Dream on.

Strung Out is a good call. I wouldn't say Another Day in Paradise so much as Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues. Their new album American Paradox has LOTS of metal. I would reccomend that above those two albums. If you can find 'The Skinny Years, Before We Were Fat' you should check that out, it's all earlier material which is VERY metal influenced.

Death By Stereo would be my first reccomendation, though. They are REALLY influenced by 80s thrash and also alot of cock rock influence in the leads.

Avenged Sevenfold is my second reccomendation. I don't think I can explain this shit. Check it out.

Another band to check out would be Playground Warfare. Look on mp3.com for them.

depending on what you consider "punk metal", i classify Thrice, Sick Shift, Strung Out, Boys Night Out, and Lagwagon all "punk metal"

meaning there are elements of both types of genre in their songs.

especially check out songs 7 and 9 on thrice "illusion of safety" cd

you want to hear Broken Bones.

Samhain seems to be another punk metal band...

How about good ol Storm Troopers of Death or Suicidal Tendencies...although S.O.D. is a bit more metal than punk.

These bands aren't easy to find recordings of, but they are pretty metalish punk:

Poison Idea(Portland)
Raw Power(Italy)
GISM, Gauze (both from Japan, both seriously extreme bands)

Agent Orange's "Living In Darkness" LP is anything but purist, and the metal influences in it are something to consider.

a few of the new type o negative songs are very punky but still have the obvious type o metal drudge. but alot of metal bands especially in the late 70s and early 80s have a very punk sound to them especially from the DC area.
