World of Warcraft.

Well, the Open Beta finally starts Monday. I must say, I am very angry with Blizzard. I had been following that game from back when Galaxies was in Beta, and I was never selected for the closed beta. I might just wait a month before buying it. Ya, that's right, a entire month. Serves you right you Blizzard Bastard!

DeadKennedys Nov 5th, 2004 11:43 PM

I was determined to get this game up until a few weeks ago, when I realized that no matter what the experience, a game isn't worth paying 12 bucks a month for.

Dr. V Nov 6th, 2004 03:51 AM

I agree, 15 bucks is a little steep. Maybe 10, but not 15. I'm just waiting for starcraft ghost. WoW is the last thing they got going besides Ghost so they better finish it soon. But being the Blizzard fanboy i am, I guess I'll buy it.

FS Nov 6th, 2004 06:17 AM

12 bucks? Fuck that.

AChimp Nov 6th, 2004 12:04 PM

Either they make it free, or I'm not even looking at it. >:

racialslur Nov 6th, 2004 03:29 PM

Warcraft 1 was actually pretty fun. 2 Was just godlike, and 3 was so-so. Expansion was :\...but now THIS BULLSHIT!? FUCK THIS!

ziggytrix Nov 9th, 2004 11:41 AM

Open beta is goin on right now (if you can start downloading the client when you read this message, it shold be done in about a day) - you can try it for free.

As far as the fee goes:
Quote:

After the initial free one-month subscription ends, players of World of Warcraft will be able to continue playing under one of three different subscription plans. The month-to-month subscription plan costs $14.99 per month, the three-month plan costs $13.99 per month, and the six-month plan costs $12.99 per month. World of Warcraft subscription fees can be paid by major credit card, PayPal, and pre-paid game cards, which will be available in stores where World of Warcraft is sold. World of Warcraft has received a Teen rating from the ESRB
It's in-line with other MMORPGs, but I really wish they'd gone the Wal-Mart route and undercut all the other guys at like $10/mo, and made up the difference in the number of subscriptions they'd sell.

DeadKennedys Nov 9th, 2004 12:39 PM

The cheapest offer, 13 bucks per month, is still outrageous.

And while most people can afford this, if you think about it you're spending 156 dollars on a game per year. Is it really worth it?

I know that fact won't deter most people, but think of what else you could buy with that money. Because one day, you will get tired of playing with it, or the game will slowly die out, and all your money's gone down the drain.

I'd rather spend 50 bucks, no strings attached, on a good game I can come back to 10 years later and know it will be there, just as fun as I remember it.

Yeah man, I can't believe they're charging moneys to support the servers we'll all be playing on. They should just make it free to play and leave the costs entirely up to them to cover.

Better yet, they should give us the game for free, too. Fucking greedy bastards.

:rolleyes

Someone finally sees the light on the other side

FS Nov 9th, 2004 02:18 PM

I realize that as an MMORPG player you're paying for service and bandwidth crap, but $12-15 bucks a month sounds over the top. But I was hoping more for $7-10. I'm not sure if there's some kind of comparison possible, but I think you could get a rather sweet deal on shared hosting with a generous chunk of bandwidth for that.

Can't they just bombard you with ads before and after you play?

timrpgland Nov 9th, 2004 03:25 PM

If you have some extra money to spare and alot of time, the fees become a non issue. I pay $40 a month on online rpin.

James Nov 9th, 2004 03:57 PM

I'll admit it sounds a bit higher compared to other MMORPGs, but it's not a DRASTIC change. I imagine they need a little more because of how much attention the game is getting. Blizzard doesn't have the same support as games like FFXI and Everquest have, in terms of server maintainence.

Maybe somewhere down the line, after the game has settled in a bit, they may be able to lower the price after a few months.

DamnthatDavid Nov 9th, 2004 04:49 PM

43% done, and I can't gain acess to my damn router to open the correct ports... otherwise, I would be done by now.

God, someone changed the Router password, and no one knows what it is.

Beta is a good way to test the game out. And 15 bucks per month is a bit high... but then if you think about Cell Phone, High Speed Internet, Cable TV, Car Insurence, Gas money... well, then it is pretty low.

You will no longer want to go out friday and saturday nights, so you won't drive us much, won't use as much gas. You will stop hanging out with friends, and soon they will stop calling you.
And your Cell Phone pirces start dropping.
In the long run, it might be cheaper to pay the 15 bucks.

Emu Nov 9th, 2004 05:04 PM

Is there a single player mode? :( Otherwise this game can bite me.

MMORPGs never have single player modes, which is why they aren't free to play. They're played on servers hosted and supported by the company, and all that requires a monthly fee to upkeep the servers.

Supafly345 Nov 9th, 2004 09:02 PM

I play games to escape reality, with fake people. MMORPGS are for people that need games to get a connection to reality.

ziggytrix Nov 9th, 2004 09:32 PM

2398.42/2481.17 MB - almost there!!!

mew barios Nov 9th, 2004 09:37 PM

ziggytrix Nov 9th, 2004 09:49 PM

I've only ever played DAOC and a free trail of Ragnarok, but I think they are a very delicious kind of crackrock. :(

Dr. V Nov 10th, 2004 08:00 AM

Damn it i'm only 27%. Whenever I walk away i keep getting a message about a tracker and it requires me to press ok and stops downloading. I leave it for 3 hrs and get like 2% done.

EisigerBiskuit Nov 10th, 2004 08:04 AM

90%

I just love Routers! They definantly don't suck. Well, mine anyway.
People said they got bored of this game after maybe 2 weeks. Why would they?

ziggytrix Nov 10th, 2004 09:58 AM

well, so far, it's nothing really special, apart from the fun of playing an undead.

EisigerBiskuit Nov 10th, 2004 02:47 PM

feign death! :love
