I have fewer sources of hard evidence for the second source of this discomfort with state-sponsored speech. Hopefully I can make the point colloquially. Americans are great at sniffing out bullshit -- it seems to be a byproduct of several generations’ exposure to commercial advertising. Maybe I believe this because of my California heritage -- this state has some of the most highly evolved commercial speech regulation anywhere on the planet. But we all know that a Big Mac doesn’t look the way it does on TV, we all know that if we drink Sprite we won’t suddenly develop the vertical leap of Kobe Bryant, and we all know that purchasing Prell, LaCoste, or Obsession won’t lead to sex. In fact, we’re so comfortable with the exaggerations of advertisers that we expect it. There’s even a defense to those California advertising laws that allows a certain amount of “puffery” to occur before the message constitutes an outright lie. We all know, on a cynical level, that advertising equals deception. In a democracy, however, we don’t want our government to behave deceptively.
Not my thought, exactly, but I DO find it interesting that we acknowledge and even joke about bullshit in advertising but become downright indignant when it comes to our government using the same PR techniques on us or foreigners. This type of state-sponsored propaganda has been on the down-swing for some time but it seems now, in the absense of "one who shall remain nameless who doesn't speak well publicly and can't field non-prepared, off-the-cuff questions" it is on the rise again. Just sayin'

I'm wondering why opinionated communities of people make up ridiculous terminology to describe their opposition/things they don't like.

For example, there's a livejournal community called childfree or something that calls mothers "moos," children "sprogs" and other such inanities.

Seriously, "SPROG?"

Mad Melvin May 10th, 2005 07:41 PM

I think I need a haircut.

GAsux May 10th, 2005 07:42 PM

....

My intelligent thought for the day was to kill time reading other people's intelligent thoughts who post here all the time. I'm so smart that I've figured out a way to not have to bother myself with actually thinking. I just steal all the smart thoughts the brainiacs here already came up with.

KevinTheOmnivore May 10th, 2005 09:24 PM

Now we just need to put your election committee together.

Sergeant_Tibbs May 10th, 2005 10:19 PM

Thinking if I should have beef flavored ramen or chicken flavored. :(

edit - I had chicken

Are you talking about the tits? I think they wouldn't do half-bad. We've already got one tit running the show right now.

glowbelly May 11th, 2005 01:07 PM

you have now insulted the entire female population >:

unless you were talking about man-tits cause those really have no purpose.

and i'm thinking about the fact that i made this kid sitting next to me. yup. i made a brain.

sspadowsky May 11th, 2005 02:20 PM

You're right, glowbelly.

I would like to extend my heartfelt apologies to any of the beautiful, talented, valuable, and magnificent tits who may have taken offense to my likening them to W.

mburbank May 11th, 2005 05:43 PM

I'm thinking about this thread. And I defy any of you to answer the question any differently and be telling the truth. It's telliology, or it might be if I knew what that word meant.

Guitar Woman May 12th, 2005 04:38 PM

I'm thinking about what I'm going to do this summer in my free time.

glowbelly May 12th, 2005 10:09 PM

I MADE A BRAIN

YES I'M STILL CONTEMPLATING THIS

GAsux May 13th, 2005 06:22 PM

Hard part...

Making the brain is easy. Lot's of people have done that. Developing the brian you made is much more difficult (reference the state of Georgia as an example).

What Intelligent Things Are You Thinking About Right Now?

Sethomas May 15th, 2005 04:35 AM

My last tantrum:

As Christians, we can choose one of two schools of thought. Either God created the universe billions of years ago with the idea of allowing cosmogenesis, chemistry, and biology to come together to form our planet and its life, including man... Or God made the universe, the earth, and man in six days, but designed it all in such a way as to offer incontrovertable evidence of a dilusion that the big bang and evolution are true. Considering the epistomological idea that existence does not abide independent of consciousness, these two ideas are completely compliant with one another.

Helm May 15th, 2005 10:51 AM

if you take the contingency out of stuff, everything is compliant with everything, big deal.

executioneer May 15th, 2005 05:34 PM

i gotta make poopy
