Movie comparisons that blow your mind

Movies that are similar to other movies (to the point that one is almost-definitely directly inspired from the other). You didn't even make the connection until someone pointed it out to you.

I just caught a dreadful abortion of an anime called Samurai 7. It's based on Sevent Samurai, except all the characters are different and there's a ton of robots. Yeah...

So I looked it up to see what the fuck, and in the discussions (where way too many people like this anime shit) a revelation brought on by a random post.

A Bug's Life = Seven Samurai.

Now post yours!

You mean the Lion King is based on Hamlet. As in the Uncle kills the King and the Son of the Dead king kills the Uncle.

Fathom Zero May 28th, 2006 03:50 PM

And the dead father's spirit visits the son, yes.

Romeo and Juliet = West Side Story

But that one's a little more obvious.

The Jungle Book (live action version)=Tarzan (Disney version)

Haha, the Bug's Life one is gold.

Only thing I can think of is Throne of Blood and Macbeth. But that dawned on me as I was watching it, so it wasn't one of those "oh shit" hindsight things. And it's pretty much a direct adaptation, so I don't know if it counts.

re

Road Trip = The Odyssey

This is not an endorsement of Road Trip.

The Lord of the Rings is Tolkien one-uping Macbeth (ie. the Witch King's death).

Fathom Zero May 30th, 2006 03:29 PM

In another comparison of Shakespeare to Disney, Pocahontas is also strikingly similar to Romeo and Juliet.

Comrade Rocket May 30th, 2006 07:25 PM

another one on the seven samurai was the Magnificent Seven

Samurai= cowboys

i didnt get it at first but then my mom pointed it out

James May 30th, 2006 11:38 PM

That one is more of a remake though (I think a fairly blatant one, too), so it doesn't count.

executioneer May 31st, 2006 03:42 AM

Lion King wasn't touted as being a remake of Hamlet. Magnificent Seven was always made clear to a remake (or at least heavily inspired from) Seven Samurai.
