I watched Sorcerer's Apprentice, it was better than I thought it would be

Dimnos Jun 16th, 2011 03:41 PM

Agreed.

Kitsa Jun 16th, 2011 05:26 PM

I just can't get behind Nicholas Cage.

Pentegarn Jun 16th, 2011 05:47 PM

In the right role Nick Cage is OK

I'm trying to think of a movie with nicholas cage that i liked.
cant think of one.

speaking of which did anybody ever watch the new bad leiutenant that had him in it?

Tadao Jun 16th, 2011 09:03 PM

Valley Girl

dextire Jun 16th, 2011 09:11 PM

I liked him in Lord of War, Windtalkers, and Gone in Sixty Seconds.

Kitsa Jun 17th, 2011 12:05 AM

The Coen bros' True Grit. Really enjoyed it. Except for the "older" Mattie at the end, who I didn't think was similar enough to "young" Mattie.

Dimnos Jun 17th, 2011 12:07 AM

I liked Adaptation and Raising Arizona and I dont care what anyone thinks.

10,000 Volt Ghost Jun 17th, 2011 01:27 AM

He's really really good in that movie where he parts an alcoholic who tries to od on alcohol and falls in love with a hooker in either l.a. or hollywood.

I liked ghostrider and the wicker man for being cheeseball fun though.

kahljorn Jun 17th, 2011 02:30 AM

oh yea, i liked adaptation kind of. Will have to check out raising arizona.

leaving las vegas

All Hail Duke Jun 17th, 2011 02:33 AM

and raising arizona is a damn good movie

cage can be a solid actor, he just has this habit of choosing to star in shit house movies

at the very least we dodged a bullet with him in burton's superman

I think Russell Brand is a bit misunderstood/underappreciated and I think much of that is his own fault.

What about Con Air or The Rock?

Granted those were good in spite of Cage, but still

Dimnos Jun 17th, 2011 11:51 AM

I can agree with The Rock. Con Air on the other hand... only if you consider it a comedy.

When he first came over to America, he did a stand up bit on CC. It was fucking terrible. I mean terrible. Possibly the most pathetic and unfunny thing I have ever seen. I dont think the word misunderstood or underappreciated diverse that kind of association.

10,000 Volt Ghost Jun 17th, 2011 12:03 PM

there's this grown man like in his 40 who lives with his daughter, plays wow all day and when he isn't he is larping, the daughter complained that they didn't spent time together and his solution was to make her an account and play with her

Dimnos Jun 17th, 2011 09:13 PM

Thats dumb. Larping is like playing dress up. Girls like dress up.

I've got his New York comedy show on DVD. I agree that it wasn't his best stuff. I generally don't like his standup because it's so recycled (you know you're going to hear the "if I weren't famous, this haircut would just mean mental illness" line, and so on).

I believe he's genuinely intelligent. I believe he's genuinely clever. I believe he's having a hard time finding elements of his comedy style that are relevant here. I mean, a lot of people in the UK can't stand him. So I think his reaction is to sort of become a caricature of himself, which is often sad and unfunny.

Anyway, don't want to overanalyze the man. I find him funny and I likes what I likes.

creeposaurus Jun 18th, 2011 01:12 AM

X-men: First Class. It was comically inaccurate but I wasn't disappointed.

10,000 Volt Ghost Jun 18th, 2011 10:11 AM

As in it wasn't accurate per the comics or it was so inaccurate to something else it was comical?

10,000 Volt Ghost Jun 18th, 2011 02:55 PM

I still need to see the movie I just read through this green lantern review.

http://www.time.com/time/arts/articl...8072-2,00.html

Its an in depth review of the green lantern movie from an idiot. Just reading through it almost sent me into a rage. Then a lot of other people already commented on it so it made me feel better.

You know, for a liberal "cultured" know-it-all, the reviewer certainly didn't seem to know that Green Lantern existed before pretty much everything he bitched that it ripped off :lol

EDIT: Also I had to pile on in the comment section too :lol

Maniac cop 3. Hot damn this movie is ridiculous. Over the top action with a renegade zombie cop.

he's also apparently "the black rambo of terror"

captain516 Jun 22nd, 2011 10:03 PM

Green Lantern reminded me of Dune. Not storywise or anything, but in both cases they tried to adapt a sci-fi epic and it just doesn't work as one movie.

dextire Jun 22nd, 2011 11:15 PM

It's because Ryan Reynolds is just too deeply Canadian isn't it? :(

Phoenix Gamma Jun 24th, 2011 09:53 PM

Just got back from Green Lantern. I only saw it because Ryan Reynolds is one of three actors I'd totally go gay for (the other two are Pierce Brosnan and Joseph Gordon-Lovett).

It wasn't the worst movie I ever saw. It's better than Daredevil, for certain. But then again, I think Thor looks shitty and don't even want to see it. I just wish Green Lantern had more action; it definitely reminded me of Iron Man where the whole damn thing was exposition until the end when the movie suddenly comes to a halt. I was so pumped for the fight and it was over before it even got heated up (and the award for subtle spoiler goes to...)

Also, the pacing was fucking weird. They'd dwell on some things forever but then WOOOP HAL'S FLYING. The scene where the ring calls him is literally:

"Well I was at my 11 year old nephew's birthday for 5 whole minutes. I'll just walk to my car and OH FUCK WHAT WHERE AM I GOING FUCK SHIT PISS".

Followed by more of Hal brooding infront of his babe. Then he gets into a fight in a parking lot and OH HEY I ACCIDENTALLY A GIANT FIST.

I'm just fucking sick of superhero movies. Can we go back to coming up with new ideas so we can stop milking old franchises?

captain516 Jun 25th, 2011 12:23 AM

What? you lost me at Joseph Gordon-Lovett.

Mad Melvin Jun 26th, 2011 07:08 PM

Love and Other Drugs

My girlfriend forced me to watch a chickflick with her. The first half of the movie was basically softcore porn. The second half was by the numbers romantic comedy with the most annoying comical sidecharacter ever. So yeah, I pretty much hated everything about this movie (excluding Anne Hathaways tits), but at least I got laid.

10,000 Volt Ghost Jun 27th, 2011 01:38 AM

Might watch that later again.

Watching coneheads. Fucking love this movie.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

You can skip out on all the early 90's superhero movies(capt america, spider man, some other garbage). I remember being disapointed with them when they came out.

Daredevil was on tv when I went home for lunch. I forgot Collin Farrel played bullseye. :/

When they introduced Fisk they were playing "Lapdance" by nerd and it made me crack up. Then I remembered that it probably came out when this movie was released.

kahljorn Jul 1st, 2011 07:48 PM

man i hate inception sort of.

fucking juno is an annoying character, and it seems like all the other characters were added more for plot convenience than anything else. "HEY, YOU CAN GO INTO DREAMS RIGHT? ALSO BRING THAT BABY IM SURE HE HAS SOME KARATE MOVES TOO."

but yea i really hate juno. I think it would've been cooler if t here was no juno. Pretty much all the other characters end up looking like inexperienced cockmonkies cause of juno. plus she's annoying and bitchy and a know it all. It would've been cool if she would've died because she was cocky.
also that movie is totally not deep. It's more like an action movie than anything else.

Spoilers!

pretty much the only character i like in that whole movie is the guy from 28 days later. he should've gotten a best actors award for that movie.

That's pretty spot on. Still no Grimlock. It seemed like they focused more on the humans again. There were still a few "Missing Transformers" scenes where they just go missing for 20 minutes of the movie and then are back.

Optimus Prime seems like he just runs on adrenaline.
Spoilers!

edit: Also saw it in I-Max 3D. Got there kinda late so we had to sit on the side. There is a part where they are sliding down something and it looked amazing because I actually had to turn my head to the right side of the screen.

As with every Imax movie the imax scenes were worth it. Although an entire film is never directly filmed with it.

The original or the Nick Cage remake? Because I lost it during the bees scene in the remake and a bunch of dumb old fogies got mad at me because I laughed like a madman through the whole scene.

Not a new film for me, but the latest film I watched was David Cronenberg's film version of Naked Lunch. I originally saw it on a VHS cassette that I bought at a flea-market when I was twelve. Diehard Burroughs fans may hate it, but I loved it just as much as I did when I was twelve and terrified that my dad would catch me watching it.

The Mechanic!

I was happily surprised that it didn't suck old-man balls.

Kitsa Jul 4th, 2011 01:16 PM

I'd never seen Zoolander before, and I watched part of it yesterday. It was better than I thought it would be, unless the gasoline fight was the peak of the whole movie.

Also made the decision to skip "Inception". I used to really like Ellen Page, back in the TPB days, and I have Hard Candy on DVD. She kind of lost me around Whip It, which seemed like Ghost World Lite to me for some reason. Anyway, I watched the South Park Inception ep and I think I've got the gist.

Kitsa Jul 4th, 2011 02:46 PM

Mugabe and the White African.

This movie reinforces my lifelong decision to stick to my former list of countries I'd avoid like the damn plague. Zimbabwe is on the list. It's just one of those places that won't go well if you're not on the violent guy's side.

My buddies and I are having a movie night every week. Our first movie was The Thing.

That movie is waaaaay funnier than it wants to be. We were laughing the entire time. Really awkward editing and script. I'd probably be scared shitless if I was 8.

Mad Melvin Jul 7th, 2011 04:21 PM

What's wrong with the editing? The Thing is very well edited and paced in my opinion. The special effects are very good also, and still manage to impress me (excluding the stop motion). Carpenter has also managed to capture the sense of isolation and tension you would expect. I love the movie, even without nostalgic glasses on.

green lantern-
it's hardly the worthless pile of shit critics say it is, but it's generic as all hell
the cgi is fucking terrible
the way krona and parallax were used was a mistake
it's too short
not enough time spent on oa or with some of the central lanterns
the set up at the end was really weak

if warner is gonna go ahead with a sequel, it'd need a new writing team and they shouldn't interfere this time

10,000 Volt Ghost Jul 9th, 2011 01:42 PM

kinda hoping that green lantern bombed in the writing dept so the sequel doesn't mess up the deadpool movie.

Fathom Zero Jul 9th, 2011 05:35 PM

I was out the other day and my friends asked me if I wanted to see a movie with them. I said sure and they asked me what movie I wanted to go see. I told them, "The Green Hornet," as it was, of the two 'Green' movies, the obviously better choice. They told me it was already on DVD.

I felt dumb.

So we saw the Green Lantern and I was bored and definitely fell asleep for a stretch of it. Coming back home, I borrowed my bro's copy of the Green Hornet and was quite happy with it. Srsly, I loved the Green Hornet.

Also, saw American: The Bill Hicks Story.

I don't have to say anything - you already know you should watch it. It's a fantastically made doc.

10,000 Volt Ghost Jul 9th, 2011 06:58 PM

Lots of awkward cuts and fades. Sometimes someone will say something to someone, and the camera will just hang on them...and nothing happens...oh right we need to fade out! Okay!

I remember one part where the black guy who wasn't on rollerblades was tied up with another dude, and the black guy is all "LET ME OUTTA HERE! COME ON!" Then it just cut right to the other guy being tied up by himself. Or another scene where one of the dudes asks the doctor something, and the doctor just says nothing, and there's a long pause of nothing, then the camera fades out. It leads to some unintentionally funny moments.

Lots of scenes were a lot funnier than they were supposed to be. I think the only time we jumped was when one dude's stomach grows a mouth and eats a guy's hands as he's about to use a defibrillator. But even after that we were laughing because that shit was so silly. :lol
