Battle Royale

Just saw "Battle Royale" and this movie owns.

It's about 40 Japanese high school kids on an island playing a crazy elimination game. Last one standing wins.

Great story line and character development + insane violence = WINNER.

The book was quite good. I want to see the movie very badly.

The only part in the movie that really grated on me was when that girl stabbed the guy in the penis. Not a pleasant thing to see.

That was the girl from Kill Bill. I was disappointed that she had such a small part in the movie since she is capable of more.

Anyway, the teacher guy OWNS. I was cracking up at every one of his lines. "Only 3 dead last night? You guys have been slacking off!! ADD MORE DANGER ZONES!"

And the happy girl in the video is also funny as fuck. Watch the movie and you won't be disappointed.

If this movie "owns," then what do you do "rent"?

Protoclown Nov 14th, 2003 02:03 PM

Hold on to your sides, folks.

dellsucks4me Nov 14th, 2003 05:05 PM

Has anyone seen this movie that speaks Japanese? I wan't to know how accurate the sub-titles are.

It just seemed wierd in a few moments. Example- During a death scene of a couple, they call each other "cool".

O71394658 Nov 14th, 2003 06:01 PM

They call each other "cool" because they are really representative of around 8th-9th graders. They don't have the courage or intellectual capacity to fully express their emotions into words. That is why they call each other "cool" (actually it was only the one girl, Chigusa, that dies. Sugimara didn't die in that scene.)

I just got back from seeing it.

I can't believe Vic Romano was in that movie.

ACAB Nov 21st, 2003 03:04 PM

Battle Royale is a pretty cool movie. To bad it's nearly impossible to find it in America.

Heres some things I learned from the movie
It's better if you don't brag about your bulletproof vest until you're absolutely sure your shooter is gone.

The average 9th grader can absorb 20 or 30 9mm rounds with hardly any damage.

A potlid can be useful in combat.

Bump? Hardly.

The manga that inspired the movie is out stateside now, and just for the record, it kicks ass. I'm up to volume two right now and so far I've seen that the manga goes past ten volumes total. Badass.

While this is bumped, I have a couple questions:

A search on Amazon turns up Battle Royale (out of stock), and Battle Royale (not yet released, not in production). Am I missing something? I would imagine the not yet released item would be the prospects of a special edition. But since it doesn't say so, and since this is a Japanese film (though the fast-growing cult following in the US might be grounds for a new edition) make it seem unlikely.

Also, I found something called Battle Royal High School. It's also a DVD. There seems to be some sort of connection, though there aren't any product details or reviews to know for sure.

So, can anyone shed any light on these three DVDs? Also, have you found your Blockbuster to carry this, Audition, or other similar films? Because I'd REALLY like to be able to rent them or something before I shell out the money just because everyone says they're great (although I'll admit, it's hard not to since I'm very intrigued by both films).

Snatchtastic Jan 15th, 2004 06:39 PM

.

The first DVD was just the regular movie.

THe second DVD was a special edition with un-cut footage and a few grissly added death scenes. Also in the special Edition you get a cell from the movie and a booklet of where all the kids were when they were killed.

Both DVD's are in SPAL format so you will need a region one dvd player to watch the movie. I heard do to popularity of this film, it will be mass produced for a late 2004 release when the sequel to this film hits theatres in Hong Kong.

Battle Royale High School was some kids cartoon that was released in Japan in 1988.

The movie Battle Royale isn't carried by any major retail chains or stores. Many people have to import it, and even after that, you have to make sure it's the right "region" DVD. www.aznfilms.com is a U.S. based company that offers it for a good price. If you don't want to pay money to see it, it is available online, and last I checked...was on Kazaa.

ItalianStereotype Jan 15th, 2004 09:00 PM

just bought it on ebay for $10. hope it's as good as you people say it is.

Darko Jan 16th, 2004 12:50 PM

There are versions of the DVD for all regions. I have a friend who has it. I'll ask him where he got it so you guys can pick it up.

soundtest Jan 17th, 2004 12:01 AM

it's pretty overrated imo. still entertaining though

Anonymous Jan 17th, 2004 11:44 AM

I don't think it's overrated :<

Ninjavenom Jan 17th, 2004 03:06 PM

whoreable Jan 17th, 2004 05:17 PM

Darko Jan 18th, 2004 11:40 AM

You guys should watch Suicide Club. I watched it last night and it is amazing.

Ant10708 Jan 18th, 2004 02:02 PM

I went to a bunch of book stores looking for the novel and they were all sold out. I ordered it for Thursday. :/
