Opeth
I am sure that they have been discussed on this board before, but i just got Orchid and :love :rock :love
|
I have not heard much of Opeth, I think I heard some samples or something, but it kinda made me a little confused, since one song had mad screaming, and almost doom'ish sound to it, whilst the other was more melodic.
Least that's what I recall. |
i personally dont like the genre, but the musicians themselves are amazing at what they do. but it gets boring after awhile. :(
|
The only one I have is Blackwater Park, and I love it. Screw you, Helm. :P I haven't taken time to look for their older stuff, but Helm sez the older stuff is good, so I'd like to check it out. Great musicians, the whole lot of them.

My Arms, Your Hearse is my favorite album by them, the new album Deliverance wasn't very ground breaking but Damnation (all their more mellow stuff) was awesome.
|
Opeth is awesome. "Still Life" is probably their best album, but I really, really like their acoustic album "Damnation" a lot. Been listening to it constantly lately.
|
i found out about opeth through this board. the morningrise album blew me away.

I was just about to start a thread about my Opeth concert experience yesterday, but I guess I'll post here.
Opeth just started their tour, and Calgary was the second city they were playing, but just before the tour started the drummer had a mental breakdown and couldn't come. So the first show, in Edmonton, Opeth didn't even play, but signed some autographs after the opening bands Moonspell and Devil Driver finsished. For the show I went to the opening acts did extended sets, and Opeth played 5 songs they rehearsed with their drum tech just before the show, none of their death-metalish stuff though, just some of the lighter songs. After that they did an autographing session and I got my hoodie signed =D They were cool guys, I had a little conversation with the singer about Canadian beer, and they complimented me on my hat :) I hope their drummer gets well soon and they can swing back to Calgary after the rest of their tour is done for a better show. |
Fuckin' drummers. I speak from experience when I say they are fruitcakes, the whole lot of them.
Except for Dole. Must be something in that unfluoridated water over there. :P |
Here's a question that people will think is gay, but has been vexing me for a while, since all my dumbass friends asked me what Opeth is when I told them I was going to their concert.
What sub genre of metal would you put them in? Calling them a metal band really doesn't describe them very well to anyone, but they're so hard to describe! |
subgenres
Opeth have been classified as melodic death metal - serioulsy.
I dig them quite a bit. I have Still Life and Blackwater Park. Both are excellent but I think Still Life edges out the latter. Deliverence is pretty good, it has a (tiny) bit more nu metal touches like palm muting and Damnation is a nice detour in a discography that is incredibly solid albeit without much variation. If they're new to you, I would suggest starting with the song The Drapery Falls. |
I like Blackwater Park. Damnation just wasn't my thing.
I haven't heard Still Life. |
I also like Otep. :)
|
Opeth.....fucking brilliant.
The singer Akerfeldt has a killer voice. To go from screaming raging death vocals into soft, melodic notes isn't something you hear everyday. I highly recommend the DVD Lamentations. The documentary is savage. Although you might want to start the live show at the hard shit, for that is what Opeth truly is. They start the show with an hour of soft stuff which might make ya fall asleep. :/ |
I'm glad this thread got bumped because I've been listening to a little more opeth and I've come to the conclusion that Orchid is by far their best album. Blackwater Park, Morningrise simply for Black Rose Immortal, and Still Life were alright, but ever since Orchid they've been getting less and less good :/. Orchid was great because it was such a mixture of different styles without really trying to sound very meaningful or emotional. Ever since then, paticularly with Deliverance/Damnation (Damnation especially >:) they've been trying to put the appearance of emotion and meaning into their songs, but it just comes off as superficial and pretentious.
To me anyway :( btw, Opeth are by far the most discussed metal band on these boards >: |
I like Damnation, but i don't listen to them much. If you like Akerfeldt, you might wanna chack out Bloodbath, he's the vocalist on the EP and LP, but he's not in the band anymore.
|
god damn, when will you guys relize that opeth is just a watered down death metal band, made for the mainstream (which is where they are going). ill admit that they are talented, but their songwriting ability, overproduction of albums, and cheese factor makes them horrible... stick to the brutal stuff :rock
|
re:
the pussier the metal, the more i like it. i hope the next trend is vaginal metal.
|
Opeth is emo for people who think they're too metal to listen to emo =o
