ROM HACKING FOR DUMMIES
Rom hacking is easy if all you want to do is change text.
Step 1: get a hex editor (freeware) and open the game's rom in it.
Step 2: Scroll through and look for words and phrases that resemble those in the game and change them. Don't make the file any smaller or larger, and DON'T change anything thats NOT in quotation marks. Anything in quotation marks is usually in game text even if a sentence is broken up into different parts of the file.
step 3: Save it and test it. Only do a little bit at a time in case you fuck things up and the game crashes.
Thats all you need to know. I did that picture of the oregon trail guy selling cartons of marlboros in photoshops and captions using this method.
