i haven't heard of paul park, but i can relate to what he says. it's easy to be impressed by a particular style of writing or whatever so maybe it is better not to have JUST read an awesome book before you sit down to write your own stuff; to not read any books ever? that seems really unlikely, and foolish too. reading enhances your capability with language and can help develop your writing without turning you into a plagiarist.
