My uncle, a well-educated man with a long career as an engineer, was unemployed for at least a year after the transportation company he worked for got in financial trouble. He searched the
entire time for a job and just recently found one.
It's a republican/libertarian fantasy that people would prefer to live off of meager welfare or unemployment rather than holding a well-paying job. Welfare isn't enough to cover basic expenses, and most people find it degrading.
