My first reaction when I heard the looting spread from the Baathist locales to archealogical museums with artifacts dating back to Babylon was to wonder why we didn't protect that. I understand the looting, and I think it's a good idea for the US to just let them vent, and stand back to see who is who and what's what... but I have to wonder why locations weren't secured for evidence reasons... that fie in the information ministry could have easily come from someone within Saddam's government attempting to hide documents. Maybe they think we got everything we needed? Hard to believe with all the hidden doors and tunnels. When Israel took over conquered territories, the one thing nobody can deny them was that they restored archealogical sites and brought a respect to the areas history as a priority. I am dissapointed the US isn't taking the same attitude... but I'm certain they will now.... and they are starting to take control back.
The real blame goes to the Iraqie people who come from a rich history, and often mourn the memory of a time when Baghdad was the center of civilization. With all that said, I doubt the museum was much to speak of.
