I took my nieces to see Wall-E this week not expecting anything at all from it. I don't generally follow animation films these days - my girlfriend is an animator and likes to leave her work at work - and visually I sort of wrote it off as a Short Circuit knockoff.
But Wall-E blew my mind.
What an extraordinary accomplishment in animation. To create a film in which non-existent, digitally constructed characters effectively pantomime two thirds of the movie is absolutely astounding. I understood what was going on, what the characters were feeling, the plot was carried and and the motives of the character were clear with almost no dialog.
Live action actors often have a hell of a time pulling stuff like this off.
Really, really impressed by the effort Pixar put forth and incredibly impressed by the end product.
