My pay at the piano store was lousy and I think below legal minimum wage but, damn, there is nothing to beat a piano store if you want to sit all day and not have to deal with customers. I could go a whole shift on a non-lesson weekday (and sometimes whole days on Sunday, if I had to be there for a sale) and not see a single other person. Once the minimal store maintenance was taken care of (ordering sheet music, processing credit card receipts, making sure the lesson schedule was up to date, etc), I could pretty much get paid to do whatever the hell I wanted for 4-8 hours.
That included doing my music theory homework on my choice of about 35 pianos, including antique Steinway baby grands.
That was the last time I actually had fun at work. Many things in my subsequent hospital career were interesting, but I don't think I'd ever call them fun.
