I read a behind-the-scenes Sesame Street book and the guy who plays Elmo is actually pretty interesting. He landed the lead in Romeo and Juliet when he was a teenager in Baltimore. The girl playing Juliet was white, and her mother actually called him to ask him to step down so that her daughter didn't have to kiss a black guy. So his success now is probably a pretty big fuck-you to them.
I think he basically runs Sesame Street now. It's very weird to hear the little Elmo voice coming out of a big black guy, but can't argue with success, hm?
