Wormwood is just an herb with a characteristically bitter taste. I think it's used as a euphemism for a fallen star in Revelations, or something like that. Wormwood is put in absinth (I prefer the Bohemian spelling, you frenchy fuckwits) to balance the licorice and anise flavours. As a happy coincidence, it contains thijune, a chemical with the same molecular structure as THC and has been noted to cause euphoria and hallucinations.
