Chilton was even more of an asshole in the book, where he goes missing shortly after Lecter's escape.

Though, he's not a bigger asshole than Krendler in "Hannibal". He intentionally ruins Clarice's career, tried to sleep with her while he's already married, and generally makes jackassy comments, such as "You're a little old to still be fucking your daddy, Starling." You actually get to see him get his brain carved out by Lecter in the movie, which is very satisfying.
