I think King did not believe he was going to finish the series just after his car accident, but he's been in business again for a few years now. Last time I checked his
website, it said that there's probably three more Dark Tower books coming (5, 6 and 7): Wolves of the Calla, Susannah's Song and the Dark Tower.
The situation of him questioning his writing career is probably explained in his non-fiction work "On Writing", which I have yet to read.
