Young people with an interest in computers can easily be seduced by online gangs, an online security consultant warns.

The comments follow the case of a teenager who has admitted six charges relating to introducing hidden programs into more than 1 million computers worldwide, causing an estimated economic loss of $26 million.

Police say Owen Thor Walker, 18, was paid $40,000 to develop the software used.

Computer security analyst Brett Moore says though it is unusual for a New Zealander to be involved in such a high-profile scam, online crime is commonplace.

Mr Moore says criminal gangs are treating the internet as just another tool to extort money.

"This sort of thing just goes on constantly … The old mafias and organised crime gangs are just moving to new territory, using the same tricks to get more money."
AS OF NOW ALL OF YOU ARE MEMBERS OF THE I-MOCKERY CRIME SYNDICATE, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT! :crime

What do you want your silly middle name to be?
