The only real flaw in this obviously well-planned scheme is that this newly-stolen laptop most likely has an integrated NIC. That integrated NIC is assigned a unique MAC address. For brevity's sake, I'll spare you the explanation of how IP address resolution works, but suffice it to say that this laptop is traceable by it's MAC address anytime it's connected to the internet. You just have to ask yourself this question - "Would the owner have reported it stolen?"
It's also worth stating that while it's possible for you to still get caught, it's not entirely probable. You just have to decide if you're willing to take that chance.
Oh, there is one last thing to keep in mind...
