That all sounds like one guy in the control room not pulling his weight.
I've worked at a few places like that & most problems are cause by one guy, either the owner wanting to be involved, or an obnoxious douchbag that is so adept at talking himself up he's got everyone convinced he is the best trained guy there & without him things would fall apart.
I hate that guy.
