According to an article I skimmed through a while back, plants feel pain and can communicate it to other plants. For example, if a flower is being devoured by locusts, it can send out pheromones to other plants, warning them to engage their chemical defenses.
So there's NO form of diet that can completely avoid inflicting pain on some living thing. "Meet Your Meat" is just another form of ecoterrorism.

also, when vegetables are harvested, dozens of furry animals are killed anyway in the combine harvesters (wild animals with a sense of freedom, who lead much happier lives than mcdonalds cows).

As evil as the world is, I doubt evolution would've given plants to feel pain just for the hell of it.

I love the smell of gutting my deer, and the rotting roadkill carcasses.
I love the sight of the deer falling in weakness, and the blood drip out of my rare steak.
I love the sounds of deer moaning in pain, and the bang of a gunshot.
In short, I love killing animals. Just be glad I don't enjoy killing humans.

I'm not sure if it was the pot, but those pigs resembled naked humans so much it weirded me out. For me the decision to become a vegelesbian had nothing to do with animal rights (life feeds on life, I didn't write the rules), it was just that the unsanitary living conditions and hormones and drugs that animals have to endure made me disgusted at the thought of consuming them. After watching that I was vegetarian for almost six years, the last 3 of which I was vegan.
6 months in China took care of that though.
Just because the end result is death doesn't mean pain that could be avoided should be inflicted. Say your mother has a terminal illness but decides she'd like to donate a kidney - should an anaesthetic not be used because she'll be dead soon anyway?

I don't really care how animals are treated. All that matters to me is how well their meat is taken care of.

I don't really know what you're saying here. By ethical do you mean how guilty you should feel? If I were to be eaten after my death, I know I would prefer it if I was dealt with humanely beforehand.

Obviously there's a bias, so taking everything they say as absolute truth, I have trouble swallowing (NPI).

besides, vegans get protein from alternative sources.
here's an article about vegetable vs animal protein.
i don't eat anymore for a variety of reasons. the main one being that the thought of consuming an animal that has been shot up with god only knows how many antibiotics and hormones makes me get all whoozy feeling. i also believe that since i can get my nutrition from other sources that there is no reason for me to consume a cow, just because it tastes good. it's just not nice.
that's what i think, anyways.
