Old Mar 4th, 2003, 12:06 AM        What about Korea?
Since we've already addressed the issue and expressed our opinions on why the U.S. is handling the situation in Korea far differently than it is in Iraq, what about the rest of the world?

In all fairness, doesn't it seem that the international community is just as guilty of casting a blind eye towards developments in N. Korea? Why is the U.N. so reluctant to pursue actions in N. Korea?

Sort of ironic that with regards to Iraq, the Chinese view it as an international problem, and believe that the U.N. should resolve the matter. Yet they believe the N. Korean issues is a matter to be solved by the U.S.

Just curious about some of your thoughts as to why the international community seems relatively unalarmed with developments in N. Korea.

The North Korean problem is being dealt with. Things aren't going to happen overnight. I believe that a year from now that problem will also be resolved.

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!!

Sorry for not clarifying that in the beginning.

You might think I'm a moron, but I think the reason that the UN is not pursuing the Korean thing with more vigor is because the U.S. is not "overtly" pushing it very hard. We have been pushing those powers in the region to take more of a role.

It is being handled, but just not in such public view. Different situations call for different responses.

Without U.S. leadership the UN is inept.

"It is being handled, but just not in such public view"

Weird, you and Ronnie seem to be under the same impression. I guess that's the word your getting from your inside sources? I am not saying measures aren't being taken. I'm sure they are. I find it interesting however that you seem to think that they are appropriate, without having any idea what those measures are (unless again you're highly placed sources are passing along keen insight).

You beat me to it, GAsux. This is a very common type of answer I find not only from Ronnie and bombs, but also from friends of mine of the same ideological persuasion. "Everything is being taken care of, TRUST in big brother."

It's a very amusing stance, coming from a couple of supposed conservatives.

EDIT: Oops! Now my feelings on N. Korea....

I can't say I know much about the situation, but I feel it's very important that this be handled through strong diplomacy, rather than harsh words and cowboy talk. N. Korea, IMO, isn't planning on bombing anybody anytime soon, otherwise, why would they have gone public with their nuclear program?

They want something, and above all, they want a certain degree of security and autonomy, post- "evil axis" rhetoric. It's rhetoric like this that needs to end, or else N. Korea will turn into a bad guy's K Mart for naughty weapons, and then we have problems.

I don't see how "It is being handled, but just not in such public view" implies special sources. Are you suggesting that nothing at all is being done by this administration?

I stand by my earlier statements in regard to the region and the UN.

No, in fact he said the complete opposite.

"The UN blows, U.S.A. U.S.A.!!!!" That shed a TON of light on the matter!

The UN is doing a good enough job.

North Korea hasn't done anything that the U.S. isn't guilty of recently; thumbing it's nose at international treaties, ignoring everyone else's demands, sabre rattling, etc.

If North Korea is anyone's "problem," it's solely the U.S's.

Nobody believes North Korea becuase of their hyperbolic rhetoric. We will look pretty damn stupid if it turns out they mean it. Peronally, I think harrassing a US spy plane for the first time since the sixties is a sign they kind of are serious. Too bad we won't 'negotiate' with them. But, you know, were pretty busy with Iraq. The administration couldn't even be bothered to read the budget before signing it, how are they supposed to deal with a real crisis? Iraq is such a big deal, those poor folks in the West Wing hardly have time to erode civil rights. I think y'all should ease up. Once the killin' starts, they'll be in more relaxed frame of mind.

Why would North Korea be a problem to Canada? They haven't done anything to us, and we haven't done anything to them.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Canada has to go in and do a bunch of negotiating just to settle everyone down. Sad thing is, though, the U.S. would never listen.

Well, say a mushroom cloud was seen over Seattle. The fallout could very well reach Canada.

Maybe they launch a missile and it strays off course into Canada.

Besides, if the US is busy with N. Korea, who will protect Canada?

Make up your mind, Bombs. Mushroom clouds over Seatle are not compatible with issues that will fade away. Unless you really hate Starbucks.

Protect Canada from who? Everyone likes us.

Fallout from the U.S. nuclear tests in New Mexico covered Canada decades ago, so it's no biggie.

And if a stray missile hit us, chances are it would just hit rocks. But even then, if it did hit a city and kill a lot of people, there would probably be small African nations willing to send tribal warriors to kick N. Korea's ass for us.
