I have a question that is probably very stupid and easy to solve, but...

How do I go about registering/purchasing a web address for a website?

You need to go to a website to buy a website, I used to know a couple, but I don't anymore. Google it, then just shop around.

The Dead Kennedys are amazing.

I found a site called Register.com and it's $5 a month. If I buy from Register will I be getting less?

I want a site that doesn't have little "google ads" (if you know what I mean) in the corners, or banners, and especially popups.

I just want a nice, clean site

Seeing as how I've been playing zelda, mario, and metroid since I was 4, I thought I'd make a sight devoted to nintendo games (dork).

I've collected most of the pictures I'll need, now I'm working on all the info, it's nothing that's going to be ready soon but I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

Anyone know about the program Dreamweaver? My sister has it and says it's great, but I'd like to know if anyone's had good or bad experiences.

When you register a domain name, you are just registering the name, not buying a site. You could point the domain name at any site you wanted to.

Listen to Chojin, though. Register.com is expensive as hell.

web hosting = amount of filespace and thruput you have
domain registration = a name to point at your hosting

godaddy.com has some pretty good packages that include all that you need to get going. i used them to get a cheap little site up for my uncle's dad to advertize a small plane he was selling. never had any sort of problems, but then the site didn't do much, and probably never saw much traffic.

also, if you don't mind spending a bit more money in order to keep your internet expenses on one bill, you may wish to check with your current ISP to see if they have web hosting plans (they almost certainly will), but i'd only go that route if you are madly in love with your ISP, as they will almost certainly be more expensive, and might not even give you as good a rate on storage and throughput.

this post was probably redundant. sorry bout that.

My bad, didn't see that godaddy is annual, not monthly

I didn't buy any of the extra programs or packs or deals, is that a good idea?

not really. now you just have to find hosting. most free hosting costs you pop-up ads, though. you can get a free netfirms.com account with just a banner on the top (no pop-ups), but they don't allow external linking with their free accounts.

Try Yahoo domains. I just got a new domain with free forwarding, 3 years, 10 bucks. Amazing!

I use ifroggy hosting for one of my smaller sites, and it's pretty good - For the small site you're proposing, their "starter" plan should work just fine, and it's $3/month.

http://www.ifroggyhosting.com/plans.php

It's almost never down, and has a pretty nice control panel.
