FF6 and 7 Spoilers (and don't quote this):

I don't get why everyone praises Sephiroth. He seemed like a pretty tame villain to me. I mean, he created a psychic projection of himself to retreive Jenova and kill Aeris, but that's nothing great. The whole time he was in the frickin Crater. The only thing he actually did was set Nibelheim on fire. Woo-frickin-hoo. And his final form(s) were beyond easy. Like I said, I beat him by accident (I was trying to see his Supernova attack, which he still has yet to show me).

Although he does kick ass in Kingdom Hearts.

Now Kefka, THERE'S a villain. He overthrows the Empire, kills Ghestal and General Leo, enacts genocide on the Espers, poisons a kingdom's drinking supply, and possess the powers of the three statues, plunging the entire WORLD into ruin, with his very own tower in the center of it all. And his final form is 4 different bosses (you had to beat one after the other, no pauses).

All Sephiroth did was sleep in a crater made by his mommy. Pussy.

Sephiroth was planning to destroy the world, and make himself god. The only difference between him and other villains is that he nearly succeeded. Plus he looks cool. If you'll notice, also, it wasn't really him who was the mastermind behind the plans, it was Jenova. That's why Jenova's arms move during the Bizarro Sephiroth fight. I had a whole Thesis paper someone wrote on the story and symbolism of the game that mentions it. It might not be true, but it comes closert to explaining everything than anything else i've read. I'll look for it today and see what i can turn up.

Why is everyone dissing Mystic Quest? If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have bothered paying full price for FF6/3 or even the best Square game of all time, Chrono Trigger.

Sephiroth isn't the villain, Jenova is. Through the whole game, Cloud and Sephiroth are controlled by her "puppet hands." Only difference is Cloud broke out of it.

This is the theory you are talking about I believe, I posted it on the old boards

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homep...olilli/ff7.htm

Oh and Manowar, Mystic Quest is being dissed cause it sucked. Who cares if it got you to play "good" games. Some people were already playing good games.

I didn't suck, it was simple. And once you got that down at least you could go into any RPG worth its salt and know what you were in for and how to battle and whatnot. Unlike FF1 which was nothing but a novel for a manual and a bunch of settings which didn't need to be. Not a game to launch a successful series.

At that time I was playing FFII (IVjapan). FFMystic Quest doesn't even compare. Sure I played it, doesn't mean I came out saying I enjoyed it.

Everyone has an opinion on the matter and mine is well known.

I wish I knew the total sales figures to date for Final Fantasy games, though. I do know that VII sold over 500,000 copies in less than three weeks :/

If that were true, then Jenova would have been the final boss. But she did play a major role on the side of "bad people."

FF7... everyone either loves it or hates it. It was the RPG that got me really interested in RPGs, so it meant a lot to me. It was the first RPG that I really got REALLY into... or something.

You'd think so, Jamesman, but the game proves you wrong. Safer Sephiroth is the even more integrated form of jenova into Sephiroth, so they become one complete unified being. Bizarro is when he is just entering the complete phase. Notice that in the very final battle bewteen cloud and Sephiroth, that Sephiroth dies so easily? It turns out all of his power was coming from jenova, and he was truly no stronger than Cloud was. i think you should read the article Tim posted, (be warned, it's long as hell) because it explains all of the imagery and metaphor and story, in a much less confusing way.

To me, the best parts of the game involved the music

The "Boss Battle" theme (Still More Fighting) was all the and One Winged Angel is the coolest piece ever.

But Jamesman is right, the AP system took so damn long.

Fuck, I only mastered Choco/Mog, Raiko-or whatever the hell it was, and Bahamut.

KOR took so long. I still haven't got it past the second level

Ultima should have been more powerful though... and I hated how you couldn't do more than 9999 damage (that's why some limit breaks are gay)

In the final battle with sephiroth, I let him hit me and it brought me down to one from 9999 health.

That fucker is not weak.

Safer Sephiroth was frickin cool.

In the second battle we face Bizarro Sephiroth, a monstrous form
of Sephiroth that symbolizes Sephiroths conversion with Jenova. Look very
carefully at this monster. In the torso area, we can clearly identify
Sephiroths face, but look on top of the monster above Sephiroth, at the
head, and you'll see Jenova, her two tentacles dangling in front of
Sephiroth. Watch the monsters movement when it attacks. Jenovas two
tentacles lift and begin dangling over Sephiroths head, like a puppeteer
controlling her favorite puppet.

In the third battle, the most difficult of the four battles, we
face Safer Sephiroth. This angelic form of Sephiroth is highlighted by
its monstrous wing where it's right arm should be. Note the colors of
this wing, blue, white, reddish brown, and black, exactly the same
colors that the three Jenova monsters spread through out the game
consist of. This battle is the one that gives us the true indication of
Jenovas afformentioned power of illusion, hence the ridiculously long
Super Nova summon spell which shows a comet tearing through planets
before detonating the sun, causing a super nova which eats up the rest
of the planets. Also, take note of the translation of the final lyric
in the aria sung during this piece.
"Come, come, o come,
Do not let me die
The winged one of the lower reaches"

In the fourth battle, Cloud fights Sephiroth face to face,
without the power of Jenova to contend with...and utterly slaughters
Sephiroth. Yet, Sephiroth seemed so strong during the game. How can he
be this weak? The answer is simple. Sephiroth seems weak because
Sephiroth is weak. He is merely a puppet of Jenova, hence the
revelation of the true villain of Final Fantasy VII.

Jamesman, buddy, that's what puppets do. They act out the will of a superior, controlling being. And you're thinking of the third battle, robo. The final one is when you're on a brown, rocky plain, and you use your final limit break against him.

You people REALLY need to black out spoilers. :/

For most of the game, you are chasing her down. Where do you chase her to? SEPHIROTH! She is not the main villain. She may have been the main force, but she is not the main villain. Sephiroth's the one that used Jenova to lure Cloud to the Crater, where he could take the Black Materia. Sephiroth is the one using Jenova's aide to increase his powers, and to help his "mother." Sephiroth is the one you're dealing with.

I guess it's more a thing of view, than anything else. I believe that the link Tim posted covers everything in the most sensible way (except the numerology, that's just coincidential bullshit), so i believe that to be right. Instread of trying to explain to you my view, i once again refer you to the link.

That one's not too bad, but i think the e-mail about the Aeris Resurrection theory is full of utter shit. To me, it's absolutely clear that she was meant to stay dead.

It's all opinion, I guess, but the way the story reads I agree with most points in that theory I posted.

*SPOILERS AGAIN*

Jenova was behind the scenes. Sephiroth had no real power as you can see from the ending when Cloud just ripped him a new one when Sephiroth no longer had Jenova helping him.

Cloud and Sephiroth were "puppets" of Jenova. One thing would be like in the beginning when you are about to destroy that Mako Reactor and all the sudden Cloud raises in the air as to imitate a puppet. Then writing comes on the screen telling him are you really sure you want to do this? or something to that effect. That is Jenova. All the wierd voices, Jenova.

Sephiroth really was just a figurehead.

The whole time Cloud was fighting against Jenova overcontrolling him (all the wierd Cloud mental breakdowns). Sephiroth just gave into it. Which made him quite the badass but at the end, destroyed him.

Well, I still say Sephiroth was the main villain. There may have been higher powers at work, but he was the one you were dealing with the whole time. He fell into the Lifestream, and lay dormant in the Crater for 5 years. Doing so allowed him to amass power and knowledge from the planet.

Using this power, he was able to call Jenova and project a psychic manifestaion of himself (possibly, as it could have been Jenova). Doing so allowed him to lure Cloud and the gang to the Crater. He was the one doing it. If anything, Jenova was HIS puppet; serving her son.

And if you really want to nitpick, you could say Hojo was the main villain, based on your reasoning for saying Jenova was. But the fact remains that no matter who the most powerful person may be, you were still dealing with Sephiroth.

Besides, there is no FF game, to my knowledge, that doesn't have the main villain as the final boss.
