I pre-ordered from Amazon, but I didn't bother paying for that overnight delivery crap, so I was pretty surprised when I got home from work yesterday and it had already arrived! Amazon included a note that said they upgraded my delivery mode free of charge for being such a good customer.

Little do they realize, I still have 6 of those Book of Challenges that they sent me by accident! Mwuhahahaha!

Anyways, I'm looking forward to reading this one. I'll have to skim through the previous books so I can remember some of the details first, though. I'm also trying to finish Book 11 of WoT, and it's damn boring as hell.

[quote]If I had kids I wouldn't let them read this one. It's really violent. . .[quote]
That makes me sad.

It's not like reading about violence or watching it on TV is going to turn your kid into a serial killer. Oh no! My child lost his innocence by reading Harry Potter! Hell, if you're gonna prevent your kids from reading it because of "violence," then you might as well lump yourself in with the people who want to ban it because of the Occult.

I should reiterate, that I wouldn't let little kids read it. I agree that kids should get to read scary stuff, but seriously, this is much more violent and scary compared to the last ones. Fuck, I'm 26 and I was crying!

And thank you very much, but I won a comment of the week award from CityTV for writing to the assholes trying to ban it I'm not saying all kids shouldn't read it, but I’m saying if I HAD kids, I'd damn sure sit down with them and read it with them because it's fucking dark.

Please don't ever accuse me of being a censor nazi.

Why shouldn't little kids be allowed to read it?

Are you saying they took The Shining and put a Harry Potter book jacket over it?

Why don't you READ it, and then tell me if you'd let an 8 year old read it. I dunno, I guess it depends on the kid, but like I said, I'm fucking 26 and I was upset!

Funny that this particular reference was made. Stephen King was just on the "Today" show this morning promoting his upcoming sequels to The Dark Towers and had nothing but praise for the Rowling's books ... but was wondering when, exactly, she started writing for adults. Of course, that's hearsay on my part. I haven't read any of her books myself ... yet.

Can't comment on teh fifth one as I haven't read it, but yeah, these books really grow dark.

* SLIGHT POILERS THAT DON'T REALLY MATTER *

The Dementors in the third book are creepy as hell, and if they pull them off right in the third movie kids will shit themselves. The fourth book gets really harsh at the end, and there are people who die without really making much of a difference to the story except helping Harry mature. Bad deaths.

So you'd let your kid read The Shining, but not this Harry Potter book?

I wish I'd never said that, because 1) I hate kids 2) I'm never going to have any 3) even if I had one by freak accident, I really doubt I'd give a shit, by then, what they read just so long as they stayed away from me

pjalne, I agree with what you said 100%! I'm so nervous about seeing number 3 based solely on the Dementors. The make the ring wraiths look like Pokemon.
I thought that what Voldemort did to Harry at the end of book 4, was way scarier than the death.

Yeah, Voldemort did go the extra mile there. My point was that this kind of death scene isn't normally found in children's books. If people die, it's usually not in vain, which it pretty much was here. Stuff like this, combined with how the borders beween right and wrong sometimes blur, is what makes the Potter books pretty unique. There's a Roald Dahlian grotesqeness present, only not as playful.

Yeah, I guess I'm going to have to buy it. I wanted to wait until they all were out and then buy the complete set, but there's no way in hell I'm going to put myself on a waiting list at the library. The last time one came out, my friend's brother had to wait for four months before his turn came around

It should. You'll probably read the first two and think 'Meh, well, probably good for kids', and then things really grow legs to run on.

yeah, I know so many people who say "I read the first 2 and wasn't impressed" but it's when you finish the 3rd that you see how great the first two are, imo.

pjalne, I got this book for about $28 CND, you should try amazon.ca to find it cheap

No, thank god!
Have you ever read the US versions?? They're terrible! They change the slang, and have pictures and shit.

Canadian's understand big words and Brit slang, so ours are untouched

Yeah, amazon.ca is uber-cheap. I never go to the bookstore anymore, and there's no way that I'd pay $43 for the Harry Potter book, no matter how good it was.

The pictures are tiny little fucking things at the top of each chapter. They don't even look like anything.
