Repeated chord progressions have been around for centuries, chief. There are children's songs from the Renaissance that are I-IV-V over and over again.

Unless you mean the 12-bar I-IV-V from blues.

Which is...gosh...not present in punk rock!

See, now, this is why I hate music.

Sure, at first it's just a tune, but then it's somebody telling somebody something and then they have no choice but to believe it. And it's not just 'Styx' and 'Rush' I'm talking about either.

I think it should all be banned, or at least strictly regulated.

You're talking to a kid who is reading Nelson Mandela's A Long Walk to Freedom and just finished Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

I thought Why the Caged Bird Sings was horrendously boring and pointless.

Maybe I'm a racist too!

"Bliztkreig Bop" ring a bell? I find it funny how you think punk rock is so innovative in its own right, but then state that the main chord progression used in blues/rock/gospel music was already in use hundreds of years ago. Even if that was true, give me a punk rocker that gives a shit about any music that came before 1965.

"See, now, this is why I hate music.

Sure, at first it's just a tune, but then it's somebody telling somebody something and then they have no choice but to believe it."

Thats why you don't listen to people who professionally call themselves "critics".

I never said punk rock was original or that I liked it, and I was talking about new music, not the Ramones. The Ramones had at least some roots in rock and roll.

I posted this because I was reminded of a Geraldo episode I saw back in the early '90s with the teenagers who were white supremacists. I remember one of the teenage girls saying something to the effect that "We don't hate black people...we just want to save the white race from going extinct."

Besides, being "white" is boring.

Wow, OAO, you read those books? That's so... so bold and forward thinking of you. I'm having a vision of a big black hand shaking a big white hand. I feel a song coming on...

"The ink is black
The page is white
together they learn to read and write!"

Oh, wait, no, wait!

"Ebony and Ivory
live together in perfect harmony
side by side on my piano
la la la la la etc!"

if only everyone would would join a book club with OAO and read "A Rasin in the Sun!"

Only if he's there to explain the big words. I get stuck sometimes.

I'm thinkin' most of his "books" come in brown paper wrappers. Am I right, guys?

I think you're missing the point, Max. Why would I choose to read Nelson Mandela's autobiography if I'm a rascist? Since I'm inevitably going to have to write a positive review of Mandela's activities, it would be rather asinine for me to read it if I'm a rascist.

I'm not saying a champion among equal rights activists, but give me some credit.

A racist might read this biography so he can know his enemy. And if you're 'inevitably' going to write a positive review of anything, you're an idiot.

It's for school, and I'm reading it for a liberal teacher. In this case, a positive review is pretty much taken for granted.

However, there was a plurality of books that could have been selected from, so it would be unfair to say that I had to read that account without any other choice.

To know my enemy? Would a self-portrayal of Nelson Mandela really be all that useful in achieving rascist ends? I'm doubtful. A racist would be more likely to figure out ways to create propaganda.

It's good that OAO is giving these accusations the serious point-counterpoint debate that it deserves.

Yes, but why would someone as educated as myself believe in rascism?

What i mean to say is that you have clearly demonstrated that despite being "educated" you are still just a stupid little kid.

Choj: lol.

Gotta love sarcasm. I've met enough people who've never heard of it, so someone does.

Stop being naive. There are many educated (also, not stupid) people that choose to be racists and have legitimate points of view. I might not agree with them, most of the time, but logical arguments can and have been presented.
