I like how the press tries to make tom cruise out to be an overly crazy cultist when he says stuff like, "Silent birth" and "Don't take any pills", and people eat it up ;( lol all silent birth means is other people in the birthing chamber are quiet EVERYBODY told me that Katie Holmes had to be quiet and he was a crazy opressive husband for doing so. Then they told me he said she can't take any pain pills, and apparantly all he said is she should try not to take pills.
I don't know though it could all be PR shit.

He is a victim of sensationalist media tho, even though there's no such thing as 'bad publicity' when your main marketable skill is 'being famous'.

Tom Cruise has been famous for roughly twenty years now. The media isn't just targeting him now because he's due, or because they just found out he's a Scientologist (which he has practiced for 16 years now). There's a lot of famous Scientologists, and none of them nearly draw the press Cruise does.

Around the same time he started saying really stupid shit he had also hired Lee Anne DeVette, his sister and fellow Scientologist, to be his agent. I've seen this linked in some places, and it makes sense that she may have set him loose and encouraged this batshit behavior.

I think he recently fired her though.

Any time any scientologist does something crazy it will get lots of press attention, because most people think scientology is a wacko cult.

It is sensationalism no matter how you look at it, whether or not he and/or his sister wanted it. As far as I'm concerned the ONLY reason anyone should be talking about this dolt is if he's made a new movie.

About as wacko as every other religion out there. I don't really know enough about it to condemn it in particular, though.

L. Ron Hubbard claimed humans evolved from clams, and that some of the problems clams faced still haunt us today. I think that's enough.

That sounds hilarious to me, though. Maybe it's like discordianism and they fuck with people then enlighten them. That's actually the process for every form of initiation I can imagine.

I don't know enough about Scientology to dismiss it as a wacko cult, but it certainly gets a lot more attention than any wacko cult should.

Then again, a celebrity cult would say there's no such thing as bad press, right?

Think about it. People saw War of the Worlds for the special effects. Same with MI:2 and probably MI:3. Ditto for Minority Report.

Last Samurai didn't do so well at the box office.

The last movie that was truly his was Top Gun.

And has the child been wisked away to begin her training for her apocolyptic battle with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's baby?
Oh god. I think he still is a great as an actor, but Top Gun was a joke.

scientology tapes these confessionary sessions people give while hooked up to a machine that's supposed to measure their enzymes. then they blackmail anyone who gets into the inner sanctom of the organization, and tries to leave. i know a couple who were like scientology mansion swingers, who hung out on the boat and stuff, but they were threatened, and found a rattle snake in their mail box when they started asking too many questions. lucky for tom cruise, the scientology peoples can cure homosexuality, because hollywood is filled with rent boys, and gay porn stars with detailed accounts of long term sugar daddy relationships with tom cruise. one even self published a book about it. the media has been pretty kind to him, considering.

Every other religion doesn't charge money for you to move up in order to find out their actual beliefs. Every other reilgion wasn't made a few decades ago by a science fiction writer who claimed the way to get rich was to invent a religion. Every other religion doesn't have special celebrity centers. Most religions have long histories and shared cultures among them. I'm pretty sure scientology came all from L Hubbard's mind. Every other religion doesn't use threats to keep you a member of their group. Every other religion isn't banned in Germany for being a dangerous cult.

Believe whatever you want about other religion's teachings but to compare the craziness of a 'religion' invented for the sole purpose to create money for a science fiction writer a few decades ago to ones that share hundreds of years of culture and were most likly created and written down by people who actually belived, or at best were trying to find a way to explain things they couldn't explain other ways, in the things they were teaching and writing down unlike L Hubbard. I hate when people who compare real cults to established relgions. Established religions don't force you to pay them money for fucking everything or to be followed around by an advisor. Do some research on scientology and you will realize how much more of a 'wacko cult' it really is compared to established religions or even unestablished ones like wicca or whatever else people pratice. It is ignorance in my opinion to compare it to other religions or say it doesn't seem any less wacko.

" Every other religion doesn't charge money for you to move up in order to find out their actual beliefs."

"Tithe".
Almost every religion requires some kind of sacrafice in one form or another to find out their actual beliefs. The pope probably knows more about christianity than some lowly workaholic in new york city(of course that depends on how you look at it), and a buddhist monk who gave up all of his life's possessions might know more about "buddhism" than you(that's probably a better example).

"Every other religion doesn't use threats to keep you a member of their group."

You're going to hell.

" It is ignorance in my opinion to compare it to other religions or say it doesn't seem any less wacko."

I said, "About as wacko as any other religion out there"(semantics). Are you saying no other religions have wacko like tendencies, that only scientology has a little bit of wacko?

"Every other reilgion wasn't made a few decades ago by a science fiction writer who claimed the way to get rich was to invent a religion."

That sounds more like money grubbing than wacko. Wacko would generally provide some sort of craziness factor.

Please provide us/me with more information on scientology, I'm interested in learning about it. I do find it hilarious that people blow up scientology to be abig thing, then most of it turns out to be misunderstood.

My point in it being wacko was that the people who believe it don't really know what they are believing and probably don't really care. Scientology is actually a very good example of that, but so is damn near every other religion, it's just a bit more subtle.

Intergalactic walrus? That's hilarious. Are you guys sure scientology isn't just some kind of joke taken too seriously? Also, he said women shouldn't breastfeed. That's also hilarious to me for some reason.

Kahl, to learn the "secrets" of scientology requires a long process of paying to be elevated into a new tier, and this runs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. A decade ago, someone found out the secrets (which are not easy to come by) and posted them on the internet, and naturally the "Church" tried bitterly to sue. So, while you can make the trite observation that many conventional faiths have a "tithe" (a term which strictly refers to a 10% donation, something to which generally only fundamentalists live up), you can go to any Catholic or Lutheran or Buddhist center and freely enquire what the religion is all about. You might not get an honest evaluation of each faith's ups versus its downs, but you're essentially allowed free access to as much knowledge as you want.

And threatening people with eternal damnation is not quite in the same league as putting snakes in their mailboxes. The former can be countered by simple incredulity, the latter is just fucking weird.

*shrug* I'm trying to build an argument off of nothing here.

Most earlier religions limited the knowledge people could have and even had the tiers you are talking about. Today the lines may be more blurred, but if you look at the history of most religions you could find some similarities. I mean, they would kill people for disagreeing with them.
I mean didn't Origen himself say that the knowledge of the masses wasn't even the entire truth? Who was then ousted from the church.

P.S. I'm not really interested in this argument but I am interested in hearing what you guys know about scientology so go ahead and keep posting about that.

I heard about this xenu thing. I don't get how someone could have really stolen their internal secrets, it's pretty easy to lie about having stolen it and make up a bunch of shit, but whatever. I'll give it a read.
