Old Jun 24th, 2003, 03:40 PM        The Extinction of the Mosquito
This is an interesting article.

http://www.popsci.com/popsci/medicin...446128,00.html

A geneticist has devised a way to completely wipe out a species of mosquito. I am all for it. Mosquitos are worthless (as the article states they are neither a polinator or significant food source) and Malaria kills like 4 people a minute. Of course there will no doubt be plenty of enviromentalists up-in-arms over this...

I was going to make a remark about the food chain and the natural habitat, but apparently that's covered in the article. Hey, if there's no dangerous consequences, super.

If there is no negative ecological impact from doing so, I would be for it. However, I would suggest preserving some of the larvae for study.

What about Bears? Can we start to kill bears? I was at the Zoo a few weeks back...they don't do anything, they smell bad, & there are much cooler predetors we could release in there place, like tigers!
hell yeah! I want tigers replacing bears all over the place, even in books, movies, products, & old folk-lore!
Bears are stupid, Tigers ROCK!!!

Impossible. Bears can be cute. Anything cute deserves to live, is a blessing by its creation alone, and must be preserved by all costs. Anything ugly or irritating however has no such right.

Considering the fact that mosquitos kill a HELL of a lot more people than bear attacks, don't you think that is a rather unfair judgement of motives?

Yeap, I'm for mosquito genocide. Not that the West Nile Virus is a major threat yet, it's at least a good reason to kill 'em off.

I think I heard years ago that to do away with mosquitos would probably cause mass die-outs of bat populations, which in turn would fuck up all kinds of shit. But then again, they are annoying little boogers.

We need mosquitos because in sixty million years time the only relic of human DNA will be in a mosquito trapped in amber and the new dolphin race will be able to recreate us using advanced cloning techniques in a theme park called "Clone-o Sapiens™" and we shall break free and run rampage before eventually being outwitted by the dolphin children.

But Kelly, if PETA didn't care about useless animals that aren't cute, then we might not be blessed with your presence

Ahhh ... like a mosquito is attracted to the light. You're comment was both anticipated and amusing.

SAVE THE COCKROACH!!

I have got to start wearing bug repellent. I keep getting eaten alive every fucking time I go out to weed the front garden. They even show up on drizzly days for a free meal.
