I've seen too many good concerts to say that one is the best, so here are my favorites:

Tom Waits (yowza!)
Overkill (about a dozen times)
Motorhead
Clutch
Poe (at a Borders store, karaoke-style- one of the best "concerts" I've ever seen)
St. Louis Symphony Orchestra- Beethoven's Symphony No. 9
The Trip Daddys (St. Louis-area psychobilly band)

Best

Mars Volta - they did a 7-minute version of Interiatic Esp with MARACAS
Melt Banana - yes
The who - it was only a couple days after John's death and they still did great
Melvins - hahahahahah buzzo
High on fire - I am proud to wear their sweatshirt
Locust - aside from the buzzing sound at the end of their set that almost killed everyone's ears

Worst

Disturbed - I used to be a big Disturbed fanatic. That was until I saw them
Papa Roach - Coby Dick (or whatever his name is now) should never try to act like a metalcore singer
Sum 41 - OKAY FUCKERS SHITS CUNTS FUCKERS LETS FUCK THIS SHIT UP LIKE ASS
Your enemies friends - first song = good, the rest = uhggugghhug
STUN - Don't quit you jobs

Hmm... best live I've seen must have been Candlemass. All two times.

Worst live I've seen would be a series of local bands but the worse live show I payed money to see would be uhh... Tiamat. Which is a shame, given how great that band used to be.

Also avoid Evergray as they're boring as fuck, and Angeldust.

I'd like to see Today is the Day

Oh and a friend of mine swears that the best band that he's seen live is the argentinian stoner/jazz whatever trio Natas. I just dig how their name is Satan backwards. And the worst were Lord 13 (local Kyuss rip-off)

worst: john anderson with his annoying "swingin" song at a local middle school when i was about 12.

best: todd rundgren at a small nc club in '91. he did "fuck you, jesse helms." :P
or the dead in raleigh, probably '92. when they started playing "box of rain," the sky immediately started misting the hot-as-hell day cool.

The worst "band" I ever saw was some guy with a guitar singing pseudo-intellectual hippy bullshit in a whiney voice. He played before TheyMightBeGiants went on, and the anticipation to see TMBG was adding to my irritation caused by the whining weener. He was so shitty, I don't even know his name.

The best shows tie for first place: AFI, who rocked the muthafuckin hizzouse with 2 solid hours of the awesome.

And, VNV who had the raddest light show ever to pulse with their amazing music.

I saw Today is the Day open for Helmet several years ago. They sucked. Absolutely horrible.

About Mastodon you are very correct. I caught them live in Chicago a couple of years ago. I had actually gone to see High on Fire, and ended up liking Mastodon better. They are extremely talented.
