Old Jun 5th, 2008, 08:00 AM        Comics I should read
I currently have a lot of free time in my hands. While not having any studies at the moment and still struggling to find a summer job, it's no surprise that I have to come up with ways to battle the boredom. Reading comics would be a good idea.

What I want you to do, is to suggest great story arcs I should read. I'd appreciate it if they wouldn't require any hardcore background information. I've already read some of Frank Miller's classics, Punisher Born and Killing joke, and I've already decided to start KnightFall and Death of Superman arcs.

Please help a fellow mocker to battle the dull afternoon hours

If you like the weirder stuff, I'd recommend anything by Max Andersson.

If you liked The Killing Joke, the I'd recommend any of Alan Moore's titles from that era.

I liked Civil War, but it's a take it or leave it read. If you're not up on things in the Marvel Universe you might not care for it.

If you dig art, I'd highly recommend Kingdom Come. Protoclown gave it a solid review that I'd concur with.

Harder to come by, but totally worth it is The Maxx vols. 1 & 2 (at least). A little strange, but great storytelling.

Olivier Ledroit and Pat Mills' Requiem is fun. Probably not the most elaborate storyline, but it's very exciting.

Transmetropolitan. A great comic book detailing a dystopian future with a journalist who does more than slightly resemble Hunter S Thompson. All the TPB's are out, so I'd definately suggest checking it out

Many people recommend Watchmen as some kind of introduction to comics, simply because it's a great book... I have the feeling I wouldn't have gotten as much out of it as I did if I hadn't read tons and tons of old superhero comics before. But perhaps I'm the only one who thinks so?
On the topic of Alan Moore, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is extremely funny, but I think one should have read quite a lot of the victorian classics that he builds on to appreciate it fully...

Someone mentioned fellow swede Max Andersson... He's done a lot of great stuff, I love Pixy for example.
And on the topic of "weird stuff", the Filth may be the best book Grant Morrisson ever did.

I recently read Superman birthright, it's basically Superman's origin set in modern times and very well done, I really liked it. Another great Superman book is the elseworlds story Superman Red Son.

Older 2000 A.D

Featuring Strontium Dog, Stainless steel rat (Created by Harry harrison whose book series really shines beyond the comics) and of course, Judge Dredd - i think you can find reprints pretty cheap these days-

They also compiled the Apocalypse Wars (Dredd) into a great Book:
