Old Jul 27th, 2005, 10:56 AM        top contenders for album of the year so far?
my picks, in order (i'm pretty sure these are all 2005)...

20. kinski - alpine static
19. exceptor - throne
18. a taste of ra - s/t
17. le fly pan am - 'n'écoutez pas'
16. dead machines - futures
15. majik - the human hand
14. mindflayer - die and mold
13. spires that in the sunset rise - four winds the walker
12. yuma nora - red train graphing the sunset of all
11. circulus - the lick on the tip of an envelope yet to be sent
10. wooden wand and the vanishing voice - lun marquer contre la moissonneuse
9. brothers of the occult sisterhood - run from your honey mind
8. panicsville - perverse
7. the north sea/xenis emputae band split
6. the skaters - dark rye bread
5. jane - berserker
4. orthrelm - ov
3. mountain goats - the sunset tree
2. davenport - field tales
1. six organs of admittance - the school of the flower

plenty more awesome stuff that would normally make the list, but there's just been so much great shit already. hell, i could make a top 10 list of just new davenport-related releases. here are my biggest disappointments of the year so far (i actually enjoyed all of these but rarely listen to them, which is quite surprising)...

devendra banhart - cripple crow
black dice - broken ear record
xiu xiu - la foret
keith fullerton whitman - multiples
the coughs - fright makes right

I don't think I have bought a single new album this year. Ooh, except Planet mental. And that was disappointing.

i would've put the white stripes' new one in my "biggest disappointments" list just because of that godawful single (as well as a few other bad tracks on the album), but overall i don't think it's bad at all. besides, i really didn't have such high hopes for the album after hearing several TERRIBLE live bootlegs right before the album leaked.

I didn't mean to imply 'Get Behind Me' belongs on the worst albums list or anything. Just that the White Stripes (and Coldplay too before anyone nominates those silly fucks) are terribly overrated, overhyped, and overplayed. Once or twice a week in the rotation is fine, but not 3 times a day like it was delivered down by the ghost of Jimi Hendrix himself as a gift to all rockers past and present, thank you very much. :D

the new gorillaz album isn't as good as the old gorillaz album, IMO.

thievery corporation - the cosmic game
dj z-trip - shifting gears
MIA - arular

The best album yet is easily the New Pornographers' "Twin Cinema." Perfect.
