Old May 2nd, 2004, 04:39 PM        strangepuppets SPAM and information for Richmond area people
For anyone who lives in the Richmond area and is interested I have work at 2 gallery shows right now:

photographs at:
Crossroads Art Center, Richmond, VA.
All Media Show. April 17- May 6 (ends this week!)

and

painting at:
Art Works Studios & Galleries, Richmond, VA.
All Media Gallery. April 23-May 20

Also I redesigned my site because I have too much new work (mostly paintings) that's going up and my old site wouldn't accommodate it all.
http://www.strangepuppets.com

If anyone does go see these shows (or any others) be sure to let me know because I like to hear from people who went.

Since I don't have paintings up yet - here is a shit photo of the one in the Artworks show. The reason the paintings aren't up yet is because our camera sucks and is not good for taking photos of paintings and I have no lighting equipment. But I just recently found some instructions on how to scan big paintings with a small scanner. So I am going to be trying that.
Otherwise I am going to have to hire someone or steal a real camera.

love what you did with those pics, re. good job on the crops and the color manips.

if we do get down to richmond this year, i'll bring my baby. then you can take all the pics you want of your art and it'll all be groovy.

ps: i really like the lightness of the new site design. it works well with most of your subject matter.

Have to ask you this..

Did you learn more by yourself or by going to art school? Or, how much did you learn by yourself and how much would you have never learned without art school?
Don't take this in a testy kinda way, I'm just wondering :P Lots of people always say that taking art classes make you a master instantly, but do we ever know its bs. But sometimes, having classes help and all. And I'm going to be in graphic design next year and don't know how much I'll learn and how much I'll have to teach myself. I know that in modern arts, you have to learn everything by yourself :/

So please help me out a bit here.

pox -I've never heard anyone say taking art classes makes you a master instantly. They definitely can help if you have a good class/teacher though.
I think it really just depends on what you want to do and what it is you are trying to learn. You said you were going for graphic design... if you want to be a designer I think it is worth it. I can almost always tell who went to school (a good one) and who hasn't by looking at someone's work. Generally I'd say for any type of commercial art it's worth it, but for fine art it's debatable.
Personally I enjoy art classes and still take them and always learn things.
If there's someting more specific you wanna know I'm more than happy to answer any questions you have. I know what a big investment school can be. You can just PM me though, I doubt everyone else wants to read this shit

that pretty much answers it ma'm :P
Two years of fine arts and I didn't even touch a computer. Talk about being behind the times :/ Might as well learn as many techniques as possible and then do what you want, eh.

The site is beautiful and your work is very cool. The one picture of something on the beach, almost looks like it could be from a science fiction drawing (I like that one alot)

When I return to Chesterfield in about two weeks, I'll see if I can swing by Richmond and see the paintings before the show is over.

Thats actually how I think it should be.

Thanks again everybody

And Lac - if you do actually get to see the show be sure to let me know. Some of the other artists in the show are pretty cool and there is one abstract painter who's stuff is always my favorite at these shows
