I've got a project at the moment which involves a bit of icon design. It can do the really small (20x20/16x16) ones OK and the large-ish ones (200x200) but when it comes to around 50x50, it's a bit large to do them pixel by pixel but seems to get rather fuzzy when I just re-size a larger image [see attached image].

Anyone got any pro-tips?

You might be able to use the sharpen tool on a really low setting, like 30% or smaller, to selectively make some of the edges stand out more.
