Bush Campaign Defends Ads With 9/11 Images

NEW YORK - President Bush 's re-election campaign on Thursday defended commercials using images from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, including wreckage of the World Trade Center, as appropriate for an election about public policy and the war on terror.

Some families of the victims of the attacks are angry with Bush for airing the spots, which they called in poor taste and for the president's political gain.

"With all due respect, I just completely disagree, and I believe the vast majority of the American people will as well," Karen Hughes, a Bush campaign adviser, told "The Early Show" on CBS. "September 11th was not just a distant tragedy. It's a defining event for the future of our country. ... Obviously, all of us mourn and grieve for the victims of that terrible day, but September 11 fundamentally changed our public policy in many important ways, and I think it's vital that the next president recognize that."

Two of the spots show the destruction at the World Trade Center and include an American flag flying amid the debris. They also feature images of firefighters working through the wreckage.

"It's as sick as people who stole things out of the place," said Firefighter Tommy Fee of Queens Rescue Squad 270. "The image of firefighters at ground zero should not be used for this stuff, for politics."

"I would be less offended if he showed a picture of himself in front of the Statue of Liberty," said Tom Roger, whose daughter perished on American Airlines Flight 11. "But to show the horror of 9/11 in the background, that's just some advertising agency's attempt to grab people by the throat."

Hughes said the ads are a tasteful reminder of what the country has been through the last three years.

"I can understand why some Democrats might not want the American people to remember the great leadership and strength the president and first lady Laura Bush brought to our country in the aftermath of that," she said.

Adding "Especially Democrats who are firefighters and survivors. If they can't appreciatte our exploitation of their pain they should emigrate to France or Germany. I'm certain that their upcoming tax audits are coincidental."

This is the same guy who was reading a book upside-down when he was allegedly informed of the attacks. I'm not surprised he would approve the use of images of the destruction on 9/11 in his campaign ads.

I think this is not only distatseful, but I think they've made a major tactical error, and one that will be a whole hell of a lot harder to back away from than his PR excercise in going to Mars.

Their convention is in NYC. I think the smartest thing they could do right now is drop every bit of 9/11 imagery right away and not mention they ever used it, even when they get to the Big Apple.

They won't though. Maybe they'll be smart enough to stop saying that only a democrat would find it offensive. I think this one is going to be big trouble for them.

I am forced to agree with this.

I also believe only a complete idiot would use 9/11 as campaign fodder. That's just begging for a riot.

imagine Bush's popularity when people learn that he caused 9/11 to happen.

I've seen 3 of his commercials. None of them have anything to do with the issues. Just "9/11, 9/11, 9/11, safety, war, the economy is wonderful, 9/11!" They even have that cliche piano and/or fiddle music. I can't wait until the debates between him and Kerry later in the year. I guarantee that it'll be special, very special.

im going to have to disagree with you guys here.

not that i side with bush, but his policies, his actions, his war, a lot of what he has done during his presidency and what makes the crawl-through-glass supporters of bush what they are today are his actions after 9/11.

9/11 played huge in his run as our current president, so wouldnt it make sense for him to use that as a plug to show his self-professed leadership skills? also, since it was such a huge event, not necessarily just the event itself, but what followed, that it'd be kinda retarded to ignore 9/11 completely?

that said, i hate his ads, not for 9/11 but his "i know what to do" shit. "knowing what to do" continues in the spirit of unilateral action (of going to war despite protests "that havent flagged his will [read:hard-on]) and not in democracy. he is not our magnanimous leader with all-encompassing solutions, and a president should never be that. a pre-set plan based on your own unique beliefs should not exist in a democracy.

his ads are telling us he'll continue to ignore those he wants presides over for the next 4 years.

"i want to be president because i think i should be"

Those ads are not offending anyone except hard line left wing libs.

They have a positive message and are as far as you can get from an attack ad....and that's why people are going to like them.

"This is the same guy who was reading a book upside-down when he was allegedly informed of the attacks. I'm not surprised he would approve the use of images of the destruction on 9/11 in his campaign ads." - Tom

The cover was upside down, you moron. Not the book. How many times does that have to be reported before you'll catch on?

well, he was also the guy who said he watched the second plane hit the building live on TV... but he was still kind of reading books to children. Unless he has stunt doubles like Saddam.

i bet the guy that let that cover get to bush upside lost his job.

there won't be any debates, i betcha bush won't sit in the same room with kerry.. maybe some remote conference crap with scripted questions but there won't be any real debates.

and if kerry lets that happen without a big fight, i'm voting for nader.

bush will debate.

despite bush never winning a single debate, he was spun as being "joe cool" instead of "fucking dunce"

so he'll debate and let the "analysts" give him a handjob.

Analysis: root word 'anal' and the Latin word ysis, which means 'to pull numbers from.'

Bush's 'analysis' is defined as above.

I wonder if anyone else saw Boosh's smirk when he was informed of the attacks to know why the fuck now doesn't care to use those images.

He's much better if you are a conservative.

If you are a dem, you shouldn't feel to good about it.

He's about as strong as Dole was.

I am middle of the road, most certainly. It's not that I do not agree with some of what Bush has done, I just think that he is ill-equipped to be our President. I think that he is a bad leader that does not know enough of what he is doing.

You might want to ask the Congressmen, conservatives and liberals alike, who oppose his asinine amendement to the constitution. Heck, even the guy I was telling you about, Roy Moore, opposed the amendment.

On certain issues, and in predominantly all of his rhetoric, Bush is certainly a right-wing extremist. The man who ran as a uniter has done little to produce such unity. He might not ber much of a traditional conservative, but neither are you, for that matter.

Anybody who supports a fucking constitutional amendment banning gay marriage is a right-wing extremist. As someone else said here, the purpose of the Constitution is to limit the government, not the People. End of discussion.
