well, it's an excellent shot. i had to tilt my screen a couple times because i wasn't sure if it was black and white or just severely de-saturated. i'm still not sure. it looks like it's at 2 percent or something if it is, maybe i'm seeing things..

maybe it's just a little flat? i dunno. i can see what is a little bit of a tint to it (but i'm having a hard time picking up whether it's a warm or cool one). i think...i do know that i wouldn't be surprised at all if it's coming up funky on other people's monitors as i haven't calibrated mine in awhile.

It's definitely B&W. if you load it up in photoshop and look at the RGB values, you'll see R=G=B for any point you care to sample. That's the definition of true grayscale in an RGB colorspace.

I don't think it's too flat, but that's a matter of personal opinion. I'd suggest you open up your 3/4 tones a bit while keeping your mid and quarter tones about the same to pull some detail out of the shadows if the original can handle the move without posterizing. Or you could add contrast and turn it into more of a silhouette, if that's what you're going for.

If I'm posting from work, I'm on a monitor that's calibrated monthly with GretagMacbeth Eye-One hardware too, so if you ever have a color question, feel free to holla.

By the way, what kind of camera are you using?

i see what you mean, zig. i was going for a silohuette, yes, but i wanted to pull out some detail in the little one. i'm not too interested in bringing detail out in the shadows surrounding him.

i think i just have a lot of gray area here. i did adjust the contrast in ps on an adjustment layer to lighten it a bit.

i have a canon 10d. this was shot with a sigma 28-80. (obviously on the 28mm side of things.) i want some canon glass so bad, but i just can't afford it right now, so i'm stuck doing post-processing sharpening which is a pain in the ass.

i use raw shooter essentials to work on the raw files, doing most of my major white balance, saturation, exposure and color fixes there.

Based on the intent you just described, I'd say you nailed the tone, give or take a little tweaking after seeing a hard proof.

You doing your post-process editing in CS or Elements? [Actually, while previewing this post, I realized you could pretty much ignore the rest of this post if you're using Elements.] If you have CS, it has a RAW process plugin built-in that supports your camera's format. We've just started using the one built into CS2 instead of Phase One's software, and it seems pretty nifty. Truthfully, I don't really know what I'm doing with it yet, since processing used to be part of someone else's workflow. But so far I've been told to process almost everything on default settings, except for sharpness, which is set to 0 and addressed in Photoshop. Unsharp masks may be a pain in the ass, but I've been brainwashed to believe that it's easier to sharpen in Photoshop than trying to fix something that was oversharpened at process, which is the case with almost every processed, unretouched TIF we get.

Anyway, enough with that tangent, if you're using any full version of Photoshop, I recommend using a curve adjustment layer over a contrast adjustment layer. Check the link for some examples of what you can do with curves, if you've not worked with them before. They're very versatile, and allow you to make process-like changes without reprocessing.

thanks for the compliment. my biggest problem is getting a good print. i have an epson 1280 that is on the fritz. i think it just needs a good cleaning. at least i hope that's all it needs because the fucker was expensive. i really am dumb when it comes to color matching and spaces. i've tried like hell to get a good b&w print out of this thing and there's always, always a color cast. it's either blue or magenta. if i print in black ink only, there's a green cast.

like i said, i do major post-processing in raw shooter essentials (http://www.pixmantec.com/products/ra...essentials.asp). it's a totally rad free software package that is FAST AS FUCK :o my favorite tool in it is the button that highlights clipped pixels. it's extremely handy for me because histograms make me feel stupid.

i am working in photoshop 7. i haven't upgraded to cs yet because i don't have money i would pirate the shit, but i feel bad because i've pirated every other version of ps that i've had in the past (save for this one) and i now realize how naughty naughty that is. most of the stuff i do in ps includes cropping/resizing, cloning and softening/sharpening using multiple layer masks. i've toyed with curves adjustment layers, but i really think my problem is that i don't completely understand what i am doing. i can see the effects, yes, but the explanation is a little muddy to me. i'm almost positive that i would benefit from a good book.

i might just stick with ps 7 and purchase raw shooter essentials 2006. it's way cheaper, and i love how fast rse is. ayup.

Check out Photoshop Color Correction by Michael Kieran

http://www.peachpit.com/title/0321124014

^ That's the publisher's site, but I'm sure it's cheaper at amazon.com

It is one of a handful of books my aunt/boss swears by, and she's been doing digital art more than 15 years. The book is a bit dated (2003), but the principles and techniques are still relevant. It even has a section on printer, monitor, and scanner color management.
