Satan is Hebrew for "adversary".
Lucifer (which means "morning star") rebelled against God (along with a third of the angels in Heaven) because he wanted to be as powerful as God. Satan is the ruler of Earth as uses his arsenal of deceit to sway the minds and hearts of humanity away from God. He cares nothing for anyone; not those that worship him or anyone else for that matter. He knows that he and his angels (now corrupted into demons) will be cast into Gehenna (actual hell, and not Sheol which is the Hebrew for "hades" or "grave"; something different than actual hell) when Christ returns and after the millenial reign, so he is doing his best to take as many people with him as possible. What else is there really to him? He is also called Belial ("wicked one"), Beelzebub ("lord of flies"), the Prince of the Power of the Air, among many others.
All that is not of God is of Satan, and until Christ returns to reclaim the title deed of the Earth that Adam forfeited to Satan in the Garden of Eden, he will continue to deceive and destroy everyone and everything that he can.
You say that there is not much to his story, but if you aren't willing to read the Bible to find it, or use Google and find a respectable site with Biblical information and references, then you have no excuse.
