Old Dec 30th, 2007, 11:37 AM        RIAA now extorting people who only convert their CDs to mp3 format
http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/07/12/30/059223.shtml

"With this past week's announcement by Warner to release its entire catalog to Amazon in MP3 format with no Digital Rights Management, you would think that the organization that represents them, The RIAA, would begin changing its tune. Instead, they are pressing on in their campaign against consumers by suing individuals who merely rip CDs they've purchased legally. 'The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.'"

Lets hope they press charges. It might get this issue sorted out sooner rather than later.

I convert every single CD I buy to .ogg format because I have over 8000 mp3s and I'm not going to swap discs all god damn day just to listen to my music.

I wonder if this means that itunes will no longer allow transferring songs from CDs?

This is total horseshit. Do they really expect us to fucking buy songs we already own?

If this does work, and it wont, all it would do is stop people from buying CDs all together.

That's the RIAA in its death throes. All for a profitable yet obsolete business model the record companies don't want to lose. I'd give it another year or two before everyone wants them gone, even the people who aren't internet/tech savvy that were unaware of who they are and what they're doing.

As much as I hate the RIAA, I think this particular news story is inaccurate. The guy in question is actually being sued for good-old-fashioned illegal downloading.

If they really want to take on Fair Use, the RIAA is going to get reamed. If they really want to take it on, I'd be more than happy to find that when I buy a song I want on any medium, it automatically transfers to any other medium of my choice that now must be released by the RIAA.

Excuse me, I have to go through my cassette collection now and see which I want on CD for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING since, when buying the cassette, I get the CD now for free since I can't transfer it.
