Johnny Depp was excellent in fear and loathing, almost convinced me to do all kind of drugs.

IT's not that the acting was bad, I agree it was excellent. It was quite humorous in the beginning, but later was not funny, which isn't a problem. However, I felt that when the film decided to lose all direction, it became juvenile drug fest. I was not that interested in watching two madmen do every drug under the sun, only in order to break things, destroy hotels, hang around with barbra streisand portrait painters, and scare the Los Vegas Locals. If anything, the idea of doing all this seems somewhat humorous, but it was actually somewhat disgusting, seeing them binge every drug, vomit constantly, try to kill each other etc.. I suppose some people dig the fragmented drug binge movie, where the characters wake up not knowing what happened last night and not knowing what's going to happen today, but that's not my bag. And don't give me bullshit about, "It's the American Dream", because that was not a theme of the movie at all, it was just something the lunatic said while riding around a carousal.

You realise it was a book first yes? Its an account of Thompson's experiences. Its not just fiction.
The film improves on a second viewing I thought. Johnny depp is damn good in it. But the book is a thousand times better.

While I thought Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro both did fine with their roles, I couldn't stand this movie. It's one of the few films I've ever walked out of from the theatre before it ended.

I've no doubt that the book would be much better, but the movie itself was just horrible. It's just one of those things that shouldn't have been put to film.

I fucking LOVE this movie. It's certainly not Gilliam's best (Jaeger argues that it is, the fool), but it's still an awesome film.

The thing that bothered me the most about the movie......before I had ever seen it, I actually had the "lizard" hallucination.

Talk about creepy.

I am so curious as to what actually causes particular hallucinationas and visuals.

That was an awesome book, so was Hell's Angels. Non fiction by Hunter S. Thompson is fucking cynically great. So was this film, the thing is not all cynical, different viewed movies appeal to audiences. I loved this flick, though.

I enjoyed the movie alot (I haven't read the book). Depp was awesome in it and very convincing with his role.

Thompson makes a appearance in the film as well.

Johnny was excellent, as usual. Perhaps if some things were clarified I would enjoy it more. Why does Depp hang around with a fat Mexican who wants to kill him every five minutes? Why does he call him his attorney? Did the attorney rape Lucy? Why didn't the hotels ever track them down for not paying? Where did the tape recorder come in halfway through the movie? Why did the waitress flip out when he handed her a note saying "Black Door Beauty"?

Depp was really good, but I didn't like this movie at all either. The drug scenes were ridiculous. HST said in an interview he shook his head when he saw the 'lizard' scene.

Anybody here see the original Fear and Loathing adaption, "Where the Buffalo Roam" starring Bill Murray? This is probably just a rumour, but I heard HST pulled a gun on Murray when he asked him what he thought of the portrayal.

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER. Gilliam's best is easily Brazil, but this is still a masterpiece.

I couldn't remember. Lacerda? The name rang a bell, but I couldn't concentrate. Terrible things were happening all around us. Right next to me a huge reptile was gnawing on a woman's neck, the carpet was a blood-soaked sponge--impossible to walk on it, no footing at all. "Order some golf shoes," I whispered. "Otherwise, we'll never get out of theis place alive. You notice these liazards don't have any trouble moving around in this muck--that's because they have claws on their feet."
... skip two pragraphs ...
Quote:
"Good," I said. "But what about our room? And the golf shoes? We're right in the middle of a fucking reptile zoo! And somebody's giving booze to these goddamn things! It won't be long before they tear us to shreds. Jesus, look at the floor! Have you ever seen so much blood?
Straight from the book... I don't see how they mangled this scene at all.

Where the Buffalo Roam is based on "an article of Hunter S. Thompson's, The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat (reprinted in The Great Shark Hunt ). The article is a long wail by Thompson, wondering whether or not his friend and attorney Oscar Zeta Acosta was really alive or dead." So it should be reminiscent of Fear & Loathing - but they aren't the same story.

It was just too over the top. Anybody who has ever taken LSD will tell you that. In his writing I don't think it was meant to be taken so literally. I'm guessing he wasn't impressed because he wasn't expecting a wardrobe rip from the set of "Dinosaurs". It just seemed ridiculous. I liked the other attempts at visualising the experience, just not that scene.

Hey, do you know that guy who dropped cartoon acid and Mickey Mouse chased him on it all night? Yea, he went to my school too. He loved F&L.

I dont think it was that OTT considering the amount of drugs they took with them to Vegas (as described in the book).

The night I had my reptile experience I was on nothing but "e"......or so I thought

The pills tested properly, but I assume there was some cut in there that didn't register with the reagent. My guess based on what I've read....possibly 2CT7 or 2CB maybe DMT or DPT......

The reptiles were probably the sanest part of that night too. I never beleived in those types of hallucinations until I had them. I haven't had them since. Completely wacky.

Trust me, it isn't over the top. When you cocktail strange things happen.
