I'm sorry, I try to be a little more inventive than just using childish name calling. It sometimes just doesn't work out. :/

Yes, claiming you have better taste than I do is pretentious, and it's exactly what I was referring to.

I don't start threads in music, and nine-tenths of what I listen to isn't discussed there.

"Of course, for archiving, or when you intend to use the encoded material later for further processing, it might be smarter not to use MP3 but use a lossless audio-compression format."

- thats from your article.

http://www.u2shn.com/shnfaq.php

Edit - http://etree.org/faq_general.html#6 (more credible site)

Why not MP3/VQF/AAC/ETC?

"These compressions all use a lossy algorithm. This means that over time, these lossy recordings can be re-extracted and re-encoded so that it sounds very inferior to the original source. Lossless algorithms such as Shorten (.shn) allow for pure digital reproductions."

Im not saying that its impossible for an mp3 to have good sound quality. Im saying that when it comes to archiving and trading, SHN, Flac and other lossless sound formats are the way to go.

The files are still legal to share in Canada, regardless of their format.

What exactly the fuck goes on in a mastering studio? My current teacher at sheffield seems to think it's a magic place you send songs with $5000 to get them back 'better.'

The only thing he'd tell me about it is that mastering studios use multi-band compression. But he's really fond of withholding information to begin with... :/
