Old Jul 11th, 2004, 06:19 PM        Election Day Worries
July 19 issue - American counterterrorism officials, citing what they call "alarming" intelligence about a possible Qaeda strike inside the United States this fall, are reviewing a proposal that could allow for the postponement of the November presidential election in the event of such an attack, NEWSWEEK has learned.

As a result, sources tell NEWSWEEK, Ridge's department last week asked the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel to analyze what legal steps would be needed to permit the postponement of the election were an attack to take place.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5411741/site/newsweek/

so we're going to postpone the elections because 'they' want us to postpone the elections.. oh yea, we'll show those terrorists!

seems to me this could be called the second bush coup on americans if it gets far enough. [/url]

So, reviewing a proposal as a security measure is surrendering to terrorists?

If I check over my will, does that mean I'm about to die?

When I pay for car insurance, does that mean I'm going to go have an accident?

hey blanco.. how did you miss that i am simply suspicious of the bush administration and pretty much anything it says or does.

i didn't say it WAS such and such i said that from my perspective i'm ready to accuse them of a crime if it goes too far. why do i have to explain this to you? we're teetering on the edge of military dictatorship didn't you notice?? why, just the other day the sunset clause for the patriot act was rescinded so we're stuck with that a bit longer.. gee, what a surprise.

i can hear it now.. 'um, martial law is for your own protection'.. yea, just like mandatory anthrax vaccines for our GI's, and what else is in that vial?

pop quiz: who is involved in Stratesec and why did it change its name?

Blancs;

Lets say this makes me a little more uneasy than I was last week.

In the hands of reasonable people, this... 'inquiry' wouldn't upset me at all. When you combine it with the rotating shadow government we've had in place since shortly after 9/11 (and shouldn't that be just a conspiracy theory? Have people allowed themselves to forget we actually have a secret shadow government ready to go at all times now?), the suspension of Habeus Corpus, the expanded powers of the Patriot act which features things like Ashcroft saying 'We have never once looked at bookseller or library records even though we can and if we do anyone who says we did would be prosecuted for violating the law so you'll just have to trust me here' To electronic voting machines in Florida being all produced by one of W's largest campaign contributors...

If that makes me a little uneasy does that mean wer'e going to have a litary coup? No. I'm just looking at reasonable uneasiness.

It may just be a variation on the color-coded scare tactic. It may be that a military dictatorship is no longer necessary, that re-election would be icing on the cake but that the real goals of this regime have already been achieved. I have a feeling that none of America's elite will cry that the sky is falling when John Kerry is elected.

Old Jul 12th, 2004, 05:48 PM        But...
I surely understand the distrust and suspicion and all of that. But at the same time, if there were a major terrorist strike in the United States on election day, would it not completely disrupt the democratic process, and would not also the administration be adamantly chastised for failing to have a back up plan?

I agree that the idea is disturbing. But what's the alternative?

I agree. Even though I hate G.W and expect him to cling to power in terrifying conspiracy style fashion, there still should be a way to ensure a properly run election.

A terrorist attack could just as easily make bush win in the confusion, so both sides should be looking at this seriously.

However, there should be proper limits.

eg. delay for 1 week to get your shit together, and then if there is need for further delay require 67% senate approval or something.

That way a delay is no big deal and it doesnt lead to some sort of martial law, no election period type of worst case scenario. Both sides are then happy.

If this is your only hope, you should just go ahead and give up now.......because that's not going to happen.

with the secrecy of this administration and the wealth of lies under thier belt i'm simply assuming they will claim a terrorist attack happened or facilitate an attack if they think kerry is going to win. then postpone the election.. i don't see the plans working but then again i didn't think they were going to be able to pull off a corporate takeover of Iraq either.

"But what's the alternative?"
-GA

A bipartisan comission of officials not currently holding office. This is an important matter, and the appearance of fear mongering and politicing should be avoided at all costs. If Jimmy carter and G.W. senior worked on it together, do you think anyone would doubt the plan was okay?

"We've had elections in this country when we were at war, even when we were in civil war. And we should have the elections on time. That's the view of the president, that's the view of the administration," Rice told CNN on Monday.

And there you have it. Good. No backsies.

I would think that they'd be chastised more for letting an act of terrorism happen on American soil again, especially after news of intelligence errors surrounding 9/11.

Im just saying it seems pretty damned if you do, damned if you dont to me. Lose-lose really.

And I don't imagine the election would be postponed unless an attack happened on election day. And even if it were, I honestly don't beleive, unlike the war in Iraq, that a postponement of more than a few days is spinnable in a favorable light. Regardless of who appears to be ahead.
