Fine, I will constructively aruge. So why is Big Star nothing special? They definitely are special! There music is pack full of hooks, great lyrical summations of life, and the kind of melodic guitar work that millions of bands try and fail to acheive. They are prime example of how to megre genres into something special, taking the Beatles and Byrds and a bunch of other acts from the time and merging all the best aspects. Big Star songs are ones that you fall in love with and never tire of; Paul Westerberg says it best in the Replacements' song, "Alex Chilton" (the lead singer and songwriter of BS), with the lyrics, "I'm in love, what's that song? I'm in love with that song." That is a prefect summation of how a Big Star fan feels about their music.
