Old Mar 22nd, 2003, 01:56 PM        Peaceniks are shocked back into reality....
I normally would not post entire articles about a subject, but this quite from UPI from this current story, http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=...1-023627-5923r , was just too great to pass up.

A group of American anti-war demonstrators who came to Iraq with Japanese human shield volunteers made it across the border today with 14 hours of uncensored video, all shot without Iraqi government minders present. Kenneth Joseph, a young American pastor with the Assyrian Church of the East, told UPI the trip "had shocked me back to reality." Some of the Iraqis he interviewed on camera "told me they would commit suicide if American bombing didn't start. They were willing to see their homes demolished to gain their freedom from Saddam's bloody tyranny. They convinced me that Saddam was a monster the likes of which the world had not seen since Stalin and Hitler. He and his sons are sick sadists. Their tales of slow torture and killing made me ill, such as people put in a huge shredder for plastic products, feet first so they could hear their screams as bodies got chewed up from foot to head."

I dont believe anything else has to be said

Nobody likes Saddam Hussein. His removal is the only positive about this war. The government saying that his elimination is the goal of the war is absolute bullshit. The US has supported equally cruel dictators who supported US interests in their countries. It's not about democracy and human rights. The US only cares about having a friendly government in power, no matter what form that government takes.

All those human shield volunteers are fools. Didn't Iraq kick a bunch of them out a few weeks ago because they weren't willing to stay at ACTUAL targets?

There's still a butt-ugly fundamentalist Christian women from Manitoba squatting around Baghdad right now as I write this. She's "making sure" that Iraqi children have enough food to survive the bombing (as if she could have brought enough for thousands with her in that stupid backpack all peaceniks carry). Aside from that, she's hiding from the bombs in the various hospitals and patting herself on the back for being a "brave human shield."

It's sad that these people will be celebrated when they finally come home.

I doubt there will be much celebrating for the human shields when they come home. Unless the war turns seriously ugly, they'll probably still be considered fools by the pro-war percentage of the population that inevitably grows as the war continues.

And what's the use of human shields, really, if the majority of casualties for the allied forces are caused by accidents (and not rarely swept under the carpet by the military)? That can't give you much hope for the value of your life, as a human shield.

Yeah, but she's wearing a Medic-Alert bracelet! They'll find her the attention she needs right away if the unthinkable happens.

Yet Max Burbank looks up to them.

"they'll probably still be considered fools by the pro-war percentage of the population that inevitably grows as the war continues. - FS

Then why is Bush's popularity skyrocketing?

I think you misread. I was saying that pro-war attitude (and also, Bush's popularity) would grow as the war continues. It's happened often enough in the past.

No. Saddam was PLACING troops near them. Many didn't want to be manipulated by him like that, so they chose to leave.

This should be commended, but instead people like Ronnie, who are station at Fort TV and newspaper, ridicule them for cowards. Heh.

Actually, they were mad they were being sent to powerplants and other places that would actually be targeted.

And besides, how can they get mad if there were troops being put near them? there are troops all over the cities.

To my understanding, from knowing and talking to folks who went there, they were being placed in the kind of military and infrastructure places you just mentioned.

Those who went wanted to guard against civilian harm. While they may disagree with the war, they don't agree with standing next to ant-aircraft weaponry. That's not why they went in the first place.

The Human Shields were nothing but self-important martyr-wannabes.

Let's be realistic. Would the colition set out to destroy orphanages (many of those children in that situation because of Saddam), hospitals and places of worship? No. Hell, the fucking LIGHTS are still on in Iraq for the civilians! So the shields go where they wouldnt be attacked, and when they were asked to be a REAL human shield, they go home. Just like that idiotic woman that was burning faux-American flags with all the po' 'ittle Palastine children. Stand in front of a bulldozer, it cant stop, you go squish-squish.

Took the words right out of my mouth Carni.

But I'll "dumb it down" a bit for a few of our friends.

Is taking Saddam out of power a good thing?
YES

Are we taking him out of power because he is a bad bad man?
YES

Is this the only reason?
NO

Are there other countires who are our allies that have leaders that are just as bad?
YES

Are we taking them out of power?
NO

Do we have any plans to take them out of power?
NO

Does this mean the US supports bad bad men if they are allies of the US?
YES

Does this change the fact that Saddam is a bad bad man and should be removed from power?
NO

If we are using that as our primary reason for this war, shouldn't we rethink our alliances with other countries led by bad bad men?
YES

I hope that simplifies some of the discussion in this and other threads.

Thank you.
