Old May 22nd, 2003, 12:14 AM        Am I too smart for my own good?
As some of you know, I run a webpage for the actor Eddie Kaye Thomas, who played Finch aka Shitbreak aka the Guy that Got Laid with Stifler's mother in the American Pie films.

So in order to keep in touch with the fans, I interact with them at the piemovie3.com. At the boards, the ever earnest webmaster Nick decided to ask people to ask questions for the upcoming DVD.

If you've seen the second film, you know there's a scene involving lesbians that I personally think does nothing other than titillate. So I decided to see if I could ask what the point was, and what do I get? "Who Cares! It's funny! That's all that matters!" I'm not the kind of person who buys that kind of thing unless it has a point. So someone says I take the movies way too seriously, and that it's supposed to be from a teenage boy's POV, and "what teenage boy doesn't enjoy seeing lesbians??!!!" Personally, I enjoy these films, but let's be real: it's a PRODUCT!

So I'd like a second opinion. Is it okay for me to apply standards to teen comedies?

My original statement on the scene. (Scroll up further to see the original question)

Do I raise any good points? Or am I taking things too seriously?

I find Eddie Kaye Thomas' Tobey-McGuire-esque puppydog eyes as heartbeat-accelerating as the next guy, but we are talking American Pie movies here.

That being said, I suppose that even for these movies they shouldn't throw sex in unless they're going to combine it with a joke.

I think you can apply standards to anything. They may not be met, and you might be expecting too much, but standards are what make things what they are. People like Monster truck rallies too. What if there was a clip of a monster truck ralley just stuck in?

If it really doesn't advance the plot one iota, if your analysys is that it's there merely to titilate and no one even bothered to smooth the edges, your point is perfectly justified.

Well, depends if you think you have made enough money with it already. Speaking from a financial POV, I'm pretty sure that scene will make it sell more.
Yeah, it's pointless, but I guess they figured "hey, why not have lesbian porn AND lesbian jokes in the same scene". That scene was kinda funny, and the porn did serve a minor purpose ( i.e. getting the guys all excited and all about seing actually lesbian action and jusifying their acts of desperation to get it).

In cinclusions: O.k for teens, not O.K for children ( unless they're french, I mean, these people BASK in soft porn)

I believe that you can trace this infestation of gratuitous sex that has nothing to do with the plot to the "Porky" movies. Forsooth, there be your culprit.

I find that the mere act of critiquing such a film, brings your intelligence back town to a healthy level, thankfully. It genuinely was one of the worst mainstream movies made this decade, thereby detracting from the irrelevance of a lesbian scene.
