Where I work we've been making a lot of posters and banners for pubs and club which say things along the lines of 'Watch England during the World Cup here".

Why?

I'm so glad I'll be in America when the World Cup is at it's height for they are one of the few nations who don't care.

I cannot understand the fun in watching a bunch of chavs you have no control over playing a game with another bunch of chavs you also will never meet and hoping that one lot wins in the name of some much misplaced national pride.

And people get really upset when their team loses to the extent it can ruin their day/week. Why? It's not like you failed. A bunch of highly over paid spoilt brats lose a game and drunk men in pubs hundreds of miles away have to get in a fight about it. Bloody ridiculous. I just don't get the sense of achievment gained from the success of complete stangers.

And then people have the audacity to call me unpatriotic for not caring if England wins or loses. Utterly ridiculous. Now if it was a war, then I'd want my country to win just for the safety of my friends and family. But how does a football game affect the English nation?

People are too busy living their lives and dreams through others, rather than achieving something good themselves. Do yourselves a favour, sod the ass holes and their slapper rich bitch wives off, go have a kick-about with friends in the park instead, and have a few pints in the pub after - just not a pub with a big screen.

Real pubs don't have big screens. Only tourist pubs and huge corporate entities have bigscreens in their pubs. Real pubs only have one telly, and it's usually tuned to FA Cup football. It's a little different when the club is in the neighborhood you grew up in, etc.

When I lived in Madrid, it was interesting to root for soccer because I grew up playing soccer year after year in a nation that hates soccer, and at the same time Real Madrid was the diamond of Europe because they had appropriated Beckham. I have little interest in watching basketball and far less in (American) football, but I like to see the Pacers or the Colts succeed because it pumps money into the local economy. Sure, that money is ill-gotten gains from preying on morons and their silly interests, but that's the nature of the Leviathan.

My flatmate observed that it was pretty shitty that Beckham never seemed interested in learning Spanish in any real sense, although she admitted to having heard him say "puta" during one game. A few weeks later I moved to France (and soon thereafter Madrid was bombed, go figure) and I watched a little bit of the FC Bayern game against Manchester or Liverpool. The effect was killed by having no friends there, so I just kind of thought about how I'd rather play soccer than watch it.

My renter here dominates the television (no biggie for me, but my cousin who lives here as well hates him for it) usually by watching ESPN, and at one such moment some commentator was talking about how stupid it was for a baseball player to tell his agent to apologize on his behalf. I told my renter, "You know, I LOVE it when sports commentators talk about ethics." He replied, "of course they should talk about ethics, sports is a metaphor of life in general."

I told him later that it's really sad in that regard, because it's true in the sense that everyone seems to be interested in it and only a handful of plutocrats can really do anything about it.

Yeah. I'vre also spent a lot of time in the UK (mostly Scotland) and have learned a lot of things there about the culture, the people, etc. For example, Chelsea doesn't need to win the FA Cup to prove that they're the best. Everyone should already know this.

My gut reaction to that statement was analyze the implications of "should know" within my philosophical schtick, as an incentive for people to avoid my posts, but I'm not sure I really want to invest the effort.

Instead, I'll pay homage to my American roots and retort that nobody "should know" that Chelsea is a suburb of London, much less that it refers to a sports team in the backwards land of bad teeth and boiled food.

Of course, somehow living in Britian obviously didn't save you from that American ignorance since Seth's post clearly went over your head, which caused you to make a joke that didn't make sense then fart.

Or, YOU sir could be the retard who has things go over his head, as I was referring to the misconception of England beiong a place where all food is mush and all teeth are rotten. I have eaten some of the finest cuisine I've ever had while in the UK, and the dental health of its residents is as much of a stereotype as African-Americans stealing televisions.

It's not like you can't support your country unless you have a tattoo of Queen Victoria's face in the clouds, with Nelson's on one side and Churchill's on the other. With a squadron of Spitfires flown by Beefeaters soaring over the London skyline. And a bulldog bursting through the centre.
Something tells me you don't enjoy football anyway, but the World Cup is a good atmosphere. If England does well everyones happy, if they don't the papers say Erikkson should resign, either way at least everyone has an opinion. Most people just couldn't give a sloppy toss nowadays, it's a nice change.
And fuck off Chelsea are the best, haha. Remember when they couldn't win a raffle? Yeah, any team's gonna improve with a 150 million quid budget!

Yes I know exactly what ya mean. Only for me it's the NHL and more specifically, the Oilers everyone's obsessing over here. Cannot wait for the fucking playoffs to be over and people to shutup about hockey for at least a while. I like hockey, and enjoy watching it right up until around this time of year when the stereotypical Canadian in most people comes out and they start wearing jerseys to bars, talking non stop about their favorite players, etc.

Red Machine D do not speak of "American ignorance" because I do not think you intended to be ironic in making a broad generalization about Americans being ignorant. That is itself ignorant in stereotyping Americans as being ignorant, much like the stereotype that Brazillians speak Portugese.

If you want to argue about whether or not Sethomas is ignorant, you should be pleased to learn that there is a thread made for people just like you (except you're not Finnish, but I'm sure they'll make an exception) in the Mock Wars forum with the seemingly innocuous title, "Sethomas is ignorant".

I hate the world cup so fucking much. 80% of people in this country take it entierly too seriously - completly forgetting that it is only a game. Also people seem to believe we will have a better chance of winning if they cover their Vaxhall Nova with as many england flags as is humanly possible.

I agree with Sethomas with the playing the sport then watching. I played Soccer all the way through Elementary to Highschool, where I quite senior. I blame all those racist Mexicans who wouldn't pass to the only white guy on the team.

Anyway, Red Machine D seems like a dick.

I support the underdogs likes korea but laugh when they don't do good and laugh at those who switch the side they want to win when there team gets knocked out.
