AGP graphics card wont work

I just bought a ATI 9550 AGP graphics card but when I try to hook it up to the computer a picture wont show up on the monitor. I have installed all the software but it still doesnt work. It says i need mother board drivers in the manual but i cant figure out what motherboard i have. can someone help me out?

your MB should have its model number on the northbridge chipset, check it out and google it. Its usually located in the middle section of the MB.
AFAIK video cards should work even without drivers, the colors and resolution are just reduced.

It's a brand-spanking new Emachines PC, model d4617 or d6417, i forget. I tried a lot of shit, and it looks like what he has to do is install the drivers to activate his AGP slot, but the goddamn hardware manager doesn't list his motherboard make or anything in any of the four controllers listed. It's nonsensical fucking garbage, i don't know why they would make this information hard to get, but i sure as shit couldn't find anything. Maybe someone else has a source or another solution?

So it wont even get video before windows? If he is not getting the emachines logo(or whatever it shows, before windows starts to load, this is not a problem with the driver as wiffle bat says.

With emachines I have seen 2 ways to deactivate onboard video(assuming it is onboard).
1 is in the bios, press del, f2,f3, whatever at the emachines screen when the system truns on, look for somthing about the vidoe controller, make sure it is either set for agp, or the onboard video is disabled,

Another thing I have done in the past, is to load up with the onboard video, enter the device manager and disable the onboard video controller, shutdown and install the onboard.

The other possibility is since the onboard video or cpi card is installed as the primary, the agp card is the 2ndary, the perfered method would be to disable this, but in the display properties if you see 2 or 3 monitors listed then, one of those is probably your other video card, you can ty to set it to the primary.

remeber if you fuck anything up, you can always use safe mode.

Chances are the monitor is 'out of range' (frequency wise). Turn on vertical sinc in the video card control panel and see if that changes anything. Usually happens with old CRT monitors.
