There were about 800 released in North America (just under 800, I think). However, there were about 1,200 or so NES games released in Japan. And a few hundred more released in Europe.
I see however, that Zero Signal has Play Choice 10 roms, Vs. UniSystem roms, pirated roms, public domain roms, and translated roms. With the exception of SOME translated and pirate roms, most of those don't count.
The three main geographic differences with roms, however, are in North America, Japan, and Europe. Brazil and the rest of Asia sometimes too. And even then, there almost isn't a difference between the games, and when it is, it's just the title screen. When it says "Rockman" in the japanese version, it says "Mega Man" in the American version, and the date is probably changed too.
I'm kind of curious as to what all those games are, but I figure that if there are are ton of hacked roms, and repeats of almost every single thing, it should come close to 6 thousand, but I'm probably wrong.
